lawyer [ˈlɔ:jər]━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Il existe deux catégories d'avocats en Grande-Bretagne: les « solicitors » et les « barristers » (appelés « advocates » en Écosse). Les premiers sont à la fois des notaires, qui traitent donc les transactions immobilières, les affaires de succession, etc, et des avocats habilités à plaider au civil dans les instances inférieures. Les seconds sont des avocats plus spécialisés, qui interviennent au pénal ou au civil dans les instances supérieures, y compris pour défendre des affaires dont ils sont saisis par des « solicitors ».Aux États-Unis, les avocats sont appelés « attorneys ». Ils travaillent souvent selon le système dit « no win no fee » (c'est-à-dire que le client ne paie les honoraires que s'il a gain de cause), ce qui leur permet de défendre des clients pauvres dans des affaires importantes, avec la perspective d'être bien rétribués en cas de succès.
