123 -24-hour o briefcase?-
Nota d'usoIl termine corretto per indicare la ventiquattrore, nel senso di borsa portadocumenti in pelle, è “briefcase” (rigida) o “attaché case” (morbida): Ho lasciato la mia ventiquattrore in ufficio, I left my briefcase at the office (non I left my 24-hour at the office).
In questo caso, infatti, si utilizzano le locuzioni “be careful” e “watch out”, o il verbo “to mind”: Attenzione il pavimento è ancora bagnato, be careful the floor is still wet, (non attention, the floor is still wet), Mind the gap, attenzione al gradino. I have your attention, please? Inoltre, l'espressione fare (o prestare) attenzione si traduce con “pay attention”: Fai particolare attenzione alla grammatica, pay particular attention to the grammar. -
125 -big, grand, great o large?-
Great viene usato anche in riferimento a sentimenti: in great pain, molto addolorato; I have great respect for your views, ho un grande rispetto per le tue opinioni. In queste ultime frasi usare large al posto di great sarebbe sbagliato. -
126 -fever o temperature?-
I have got the fever).
128 -problem o issue?-
Issue è meno forte e possiede una connotazione meno negativa di problem; spesso può indicare dei punti di discussione: At the moment the premises of the show are an issue, al momento il problema è la sede dello spettacolo. A volte issue, specialmente al plurale, viene usato, anche eufemisticamente, per indicare i problemi psicologici di una persona: He has to deal with his relatioship issues, deve affrontare i suoi problemi di relazione. Problem viene utilizzato invece quando si tratta di problemi di difficile soluzione: The main problem now is that the roads are icy and dangerous, il problema principale ora è che le strade sono ghiacciate e pericolose.
