76 the milk of human kindness
цитату]Lady Macbeth: "...yet do I fear thy nature; It is too full o' the milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way: thou wouldst be great; Art not without ambition, but without The illness should attend it. What thou wouldst highly. That wouldst thou holily... " (W. Shakespeare, ‘Macbeth’, act I, sc. 5) — Леди Макбет: "...
Sellers said privately that Rossmore was the most extraordinary character he had ever met - a man just made out of the condensed milk of human kindness... (M. Twain, ‘The American Claimant’, ch.
Besides, a man with the milk of human kindness in him can scarcely abstain from doing a good-natured action, and one cannot be good-natured all around. (G. Eliot, ‘The Mill on the Floss’, book I, ch.
The milk of human kindness was softening the iron resolution of this man of steel. (J. Conroy, ‘The Disinherited’, part II, ch.

78 connect the dots
•• Administration, Agencies Failed to Connect the Dots. CIA’s and FBI’s failure to connect the dots of terrorists’ plans.
•• “The task for us is to connect the dots before the fact and avoid another September 11 or worse,” Rumsfeld said. (New York Times)
•• The President was doing far more yesterday than rolling out the administration’s spin for the next campaign. He was demonstrating how he is likely to think if confronted with a similar crisis in the future. The fuzziness and inconsistency of his comments suggest he is still relying on his moral absolutism, that in a dangerous world the critical thing is to act decisively, and worry about connecting the dots later. (New York Times)
200). Интересно и rolling out the administration’s spin for the next campaign – Президент излагал (или даже обкатывал) пропагандистскую линию администрации накануне предвыборной кампании (слово пропаганда считается в переводах спорным, но общий тон передовой статьи в New York Times позволяет употребить его без особых колебаний). Что касается the critical thing is to act decisively, and worry about connecting the dots later, то широкий контекст (речь идет об иракской войне) подсказывает такой перевод: ...
•• We have to connect all of the above dots to strengthen Arab-Muslim moderates, because only then can they take on their extremists.

But when I think of him charging the windmills and imagining he was doing the finest thing..." (He chokes with suppressed laughter.) (B. Shaw, ‘Arms and the Man’, act I) — Незнакомец: "Уверяю вас, я не смеялся.
