    I n надежда: а hope of smth, of doing smth — надежда на что-либо, сделать что-либо (1). В отличие от русского существительного надежда (мн. ч. надежды), английское hope чаще употребляется в единственном числе. В соответствующих словосочетаниях оно используется без артикля:

    to lose (to give up) all hope — потерять все надежды, всякую надежду.

    (2). Русское словосочетание надеяться (надежда) что-либо сделать передается предложной конструкцией (to have) hope of doing smth. (3). See habit, n. II v надеяться: to hope to do smth — надеяться что-либо сделать; to hope that… — надеяться, что … ; to hope for smthнадеяться на что-либо (1). В отличие от других глаголов суждения, таких, как to think, to believe, с глаголом to hope в отрицательных предложениях отрицание употребляется с глаголом придаточного, а не главного предложения:

    I hope she doesn't find it out.

    Ср.

    I don't think, she'll find it out — Надеюсь, она это не узнает.

    В кратких ответах с глаголом hope в этом значении употребляется наречие not (для отрицания) и so (для утверждения):

    I hope so — Думаю, что так;

    I hope not — Думаю, что нет/что это не произойдет.

    (2). Русское словосочетание надеяться что-либо сделать в значении думать, ожидать, что что-либо будет сделано соответствует в английском языке глаголу to expect:

    We didn't expect to get the answer so quickly — Мы не надеялись (не думали, не рассчитывали) получить ответ так быстро.

    I expect to see him tomorrow — Я рассчитываю (надеюсь) увидеть его завтра.

    (3). See believe, v. (4). See so, adv.
