    अङ्गिरः अङ्गिरस् m. [अङ्गति-अङ्ग् गतौ असि इरुट्; Uṇ 4. 235; according to Ait. Br. अङ्गिरस् is from अङ्गार; ये अङ्गारा आसंस्ते$ङ्गिरसो$भवन्; so Nir.; अङ्गारेषु यो बभूव सो$ङ्गिराः] N. of a celebrated sage to whom many hymns of the Rigveda (ix) are ascribed. Etymologically Aṅgira is connected with the word Agni and is often regarded as its synonym (शिवो भव प्रजाभ्यो मानुषीभ्यस्त्व- मङ्गिरः; अङ्गिरोभिः ऋषिभिः संपादितत्वात् अङ्गसौष्ठवाद्वा अङ्गिरा अग्निरूपः) According to Bhārata he was son of Agni. When Agni began to practise penance, Aṅgiras him- self became Agni and surpassed him in power and lustre, seeing which Agni came to the sage and said:- निक्षिपाम्यहमग्नित्वं त्वमग्निः प्रथमो भव । भविष्यामि द्वितीयो$हं प्राजा- पत्यक एव च ॥ Aṅgiras said:- कुरु पुण्यं प्रजासर्गं भवाग्निस्तिमि- रापहः । मां च देव कुरुष्वाग्ने प्रथमं पुत्रमञ्जसा ॥ तत्श्रुत्वाङ्गिरसो वाक्यं जातवेदास्तथा$करोत्. He was one of the 1 mind-born sons of Brahmā. His wife was Śraddhā, daughter of Kardama and bore him three sons, Bṛhaspati, Uta- thya and Saṁvarta, and 4 daughters Kuhū, Sinīvālī, Rākā and Anumati. The Matsya Purāṇa says that Aṅgiras was one of the three sages produced from the sacrifice of Varuṇa and that he was adopted by Agni as his son and acted for some time as his regent. Another account, however, makes him father of Agni. He was one of the seven great sages and also one of the 1 Prajāpatis or progenitors of mankind. In latter times Aṅgiras was one of the inspired lawgivers, and also a writer on Astronomy. As an astronomical personification he is Bṛhaspati, regent of Jupiter or Jupiter itself. शिष्यैरुपेता आजग्मु: कश्यपाङ्गिरसादयः (Bhāg. 1.9.8.) He is also regarded as the priest of the gods and the lord of sacrifices. Besides Śraddhā his wives were Smṛti, two daughters of Maitreya, some daughters of Dakṣa, Svadhā and Satī. He is also regarded as teacher of Brahmavidyā. The Vedic hymns are also said to be his daughters. According to the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Aṅgiras begot sons possessing Brahmanical glory on the wife of Rāthītara, a Kṣatriya who was childless and these persons were afterwards called descendants of Aṅgiras. The prin- cipal authors of vedic hymns in the family of Aṅgi- ras were 33. His family has three distinct branches केवलाङ्गिरस, गौतमाङ्गिरस and भारद्वाजाङ्गिरस each branch having a number of subdivisions. - (pl.)

Like Aṅgiras they occur in hymns addressed to luminous objects, and at a later period they became for the most part personi- fications of light, of luminous bodies, of divisions of time, celestial phenomena and fires adapted to pecu- liar occasions, as the full moon and change of the moon, or to particular rites, as the अश्वमेध, राजसूय &c.]

    of a code of laws, andᅠ of a treatise on astronomy
    (he is said by some to have been born from Brahmā. 's mouth, andᅠ to have been the husband of Smṛiti, of Ṡraddhā, of two daughters of Maitreya, of several daughters of Daksha, etc.;
    he is considered as one of the seven Ṛishis of the first Manvantara, as a Prajāpati, as a teacher of the Brahmavidyā, which he had learnt from Satyavāha, a descendant of Bharadvāja, etc.
    Among his sons, the chief is Agni, others are Saṃvarta, Utathya, andᅠ Bṛihaspati;
    among his daughters are mentioned Sinivālī, Kuhū, Rākā, Anumati, andᅠ Akūpārā;
    but the Ṛicas orᅠ Vedic hymns, the manes of Havishmat, andᅠ mankind itself are styled his offspring. In astronomy he is the planet Jupiter, andᅠ a star in Ursa Major);

    1) m. (fr. 1. vid q.v.) knowledge, true orᅠ sacred knowledge orᅠ lore, knowledge of ritual RV. AitBr. ;

    N. of certain celebrated works which constitute the basis of the first period of the Hindū religion (these works were primarily three, viz.
    1. the Ṛig-veda,
    2. the Yajur-veda
    <of which there are, however, two divisions seeᅠ taittirīya-saṉhitā, vājasaneyi-saṉhitā>,
    3. the Sāma-veda;
    these three works are sometimes called collectively trayī,
    « the triple Vidyā» orᅠ « threefold knowledge», but the Ṛig-veda is really the only original work of the three, andᅠ much the most ancient
    <the oldest of its hymns being assigned by some who rely on certain astronomical calculations to a period between 4000 andᅠ 2500 B.C., before the settlement of the Āryans in India;
    andᅠ by others who adopt a different reckoning to a period between 1400 andᅠ 1000 B.C., when the Āryans had settled down in the Panjāb>;
    subsequently a fourth Veda was added, called the Atharva-veda, which was probably not completely accepted till after Manu, as his law-book often speaks of the three Vedas-calling them trayambrahmasanātanam, « the triple eternal Veda»,
    but only once XI, 33 mentions the revelation made to Atharvan andᅠ Aṇgiras, without, however, calling it by the later name of Atharva-veda;
    each of the four Vedas has two distinct parts,
    viz. 1. Mantra, i.e. words of prayer andᅠ adoration often addressed either to fire orᅠ to some form of the sun orᅠ to some form of the air, sky, wind etc.,
    andᅠ praying for health, wealth, long life, cattle, offspring, victory, andᅠ even forgiveness of sins, andᅠ 2. Brāhmaṇa, consisting of Vidhi andᅠ Artha-vāda,
    i.e. directions for the detail of the ceremonies at which the Mantras were to be used andᅠ explanations of the legends etc. connected with the Mantras
    < seeᅠ brāhmaṇa, vidhi>, both these portions being termed ṡruti, revelation orally communicated by the Deity, andᅠ heard but not composed orᅠ written down by men <cf. I. W. 24 etc.. >,
    although it is certain that both Mantras andᅠ Brāhmaṇas were compositions spread over a considerable period, much of the latter being comparatively modern;
    as the Vedas are properly three, so the Mantras are properly of three forms,
    1. Ṛic, which are verses of praise in metre, andᅠ intended for loud recitation;
    2. Yajus, which are in prose, andᅠ intended for recitation in a lower tone at sacrifices;
    3. Sāman., which are in metre, andᅠ intended for chanting at the Soma orᅠ Moon-plant ceremonies, the Mantras of the fourth orᅠ Atharva-veda having no special name;
    but it must be borne in mind that the Yajur andᅠ Sāma-veda hymns, especially the latter, besides their own Mantras, borrow largely from the Ṛig-veda;
    the Yajur-veda andᅠ Sāma-veda being in fact not so much collections of prayers andᅠ hymns as special prayer- andᅠ hymn-books intended as manuals for the Adhvaryu andᅠ Udgātṛi priests respectively < seeᅠ yajur-veda, sāma-veda>;
    the Atharva-veda, on the other hand, is, like the Ṛig-veda, a real collection of original hymns mixed up with incantations, borrowing little from the Ṛig andᅠ having no direct relation to sacrifices, but supposed by mere recitation to produce long life, to cure diseases, to effect the ruin of enemies etc.;
    each of the four Vedas seems to have passed through numerous Ṡākhās orᅠ schools, giving rise to various recensions of the text, though the Ṛig-veda is only preserved in the Ṡākala recension, while a second recension, that of the Bhāshkalas, is only known by name;
    a tradition makes Vyāsa the compiler andᅠ arranger of the Vedas in their present form:
    they each have an Index orᅠ Anukramaṇī <q.v.>, the principal work of this kind being the general Index orᅠ Sarvânukramaṇī <q.v.>;
    out of the Brāhmaṇa portion of the Veda grew two other departments of Vedic literature, sometimes included under the general name Veda,
    viz. the strings of aphoristic rules, called Sūtras <q.v.>,
    andᅠ the mystical treatises on the nature of God andᅠ the relation of soul andᅠ matter, called Upanishad. <q.v.>, which were appended to the Āraṇyakas <q.v.>, andᅠ became the real Veda of thinking Hindūs, leading to the Darṡanas orᅠ systems of philosophy;
    in the later literature the name of « fifth Veda» is accorded to the Itihāsas orᅠ legendary epic poems andᅠ to the Purāṇas, andᅠ certain secondary Vedas orᅠ Upa-vedas <q.v.> are enumerated;
    the Vedâṇgas orᅠ works serving as limbs < for preserving the integrity> of the Veda are explained under vedâ̱ṅga below:
    the only other works included under the head of Veda being the Pariṡishṭas, which supply rules for the ritual omitted in the Sūtras;
    in the Bṛihad-āraṇyaka Upanishad. the Vedas are represented as the breathings of Brahmā., while in some of the Purāṇas the four Vedas are said to have issued out of the four mouths of the four-faced Brahmā. andᅠ in the Vishṇu-Purāṇa the Veda andᅠ Vishṇu are identified) RTL. 7 etc..     GUARANÍ Guaraní is an American Indian language of the tupí-guaraní family and is widely spoken in Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. In Paraguay it is the majority language and has equal official status with Spanish, which is spoken mainly by non-Indians. In parts of southern Brazil, tupí-guaraní is the basis for a pidgin known as Língua Geral, now losing ground to Portuguese. From guaraní and its sister dialect tupí come words like "jaguar", "tapir", "toucan" and "tapioca".

    GUARANÍ
    Paraguay is the only Latin American country where an indigenous language is used as widely as Spanish. Guaraní was the language spoken by the main indigenous people at the time of the Spanish conquest. The process of racial mixing between Spaniard and Guarani over centuries has resulted in a population that is largely bilingual. In the major urban areas about half the population are able to use both languages freely, while in rural areas Guarani speakers predominate. Spanish is the language of the press and education, but Guarani has had a great influence on the vocabulary of Spanish speakers, and this has given rise to a so-called “guarañol”, a hybrid of both languages.

    1 A priest who has to worship fire and Soma.

    -3 N. of the priest who is said to have first brought down fire from the heaven, offered Soma and recited prayers. [He is represented as the eldest son of Brahmā sprung from his mouth; as a Prajāpati appointed by Brahmā to create and protect sub- ordinate beings, who first learnt from Brahmā and then taught the Brahmavidyā and is considered to be the author of the Veda called after him. His wife was Śānti, daughter of Kardama Prajāpati. He had also another wife called Chitti; he is also consi- dered identical with Aṅgiras and father of Agni.]
    -4 Epithet of Śiva, Vasiṣṭha. वृतपदपङ्क्तिरथर्वणेव वेदः Kir. 1.1. -(pl.) Descendants of Atharvan; hymns of this Veda; जिष्णुं जैत्रैरथर्वभिः R.17.13.

[It contains many forms of imprecations for the destruction of enemies and also contains a great number of prayers for safety and averting mishaps, evils, sins or calamities, and a number of hymns, as in the other Vedas, addressed to the gods with prayers to be used at religious and solemn rites; cf. Mv.2.24. मूर्तिमभिरामघोरां बिभ्रदिवाथर्वणो निगमः. It has nine Śākhās and five Kalpas, and is comprised in 2 Kāṇḍas. The most important Brāhmaṇa belonging to this Veda is the Gopatha - Brāhmaṇa, and the Upaniṣads pertaining to it are stated to be 52, or, according to another account 31.] [cf. Zend atharvan, Pers. áturbán.]

    1 An inspired poet or sage, a singer of sacred hymns, (e. g कुत्स, वसिष्ठ, अत्रि, अगस्त्य &c.). (These Ṛiṣis form a class of beings distinct from gods, men, Asuras &c. (Av.1.1.26). They are the authors or seers of the Vedic hymns; ऋषयो मन्त्रद्रष्टारो वसिष्ठादयः; or, according to Yāska, यस्य वाक्यं स ऋषिः, i. e. they are the persons to whom the Vedic hymns were revealed. In every Sūkta the ऋषि is mentioned along with the देवता, छन्दस् and विनियोग. The later works mention seven Ṛiṣis or saptarṣis whose names, according to Śat. Br., are गौतम, भरद्वाज, विश्वामित्र, जमदग्नि, वसिष्ठ, कश्यप and अत्रि; according to Mahābhārata, मरीचि, अत्रि, अङ्गिरस्, पुलह, क्रतु, पुलस्त्य and वसिष्ठ; Manu calls these sages Prajāpatis or pro- genitors of mankind, and gives ten names, three more being added to the latter list, i. e. दक्ष or प्रचेतस्, भृगु and नारद. In astronomy the seven Ṛiṣis form the constellation of "the Great Bear"); यत्रा सप्त ऋषीन् पर एकमाहुः Rv.1.82.2.
