[лат. prosta(ta) — предстательная железа, от греч. prostates — стоящий впереди, лат. gland(ula) — железа и лат. - in(e) — суффикс, обозначающий "подобный"]биологически активные вещества, жирные кислоты, имеющие скелет из 20 атомов углерода и содержащие циклопентановое кольцо. П. образуются в организмах большинства животных и человека из незаменимых жирных кислот. Известно около 20 природных П. Важнейшее физиологическое действие П. — способность вызывать сокращение гладких мышц; кроме того, П. активируют деятельность нервной системы, оказывают противозачаточное действие, регулируют выделение желудочного сока и др. Термин "П." предложен У. фон Эйлером (Нобелевская премия за 1970 г.). За открытия, касающиеся П. и близких к ним биологически активных веществ, С. Бергстрем, Б. Самуэльсон и Дж.
