Фильм не принадлежит ни к одному из известных жанров и создает собственный, с пронзительной поэтичностью рассказывая о превосходстве мечты над реальностью, того, что могло быть, над тем, что было. Это еще и фильм об одиночестве, обо всех неудовлетворенных и мечтательных натурах, которым именно одиночество открывает путь к познанию природы, к отдаленной и почти нематериальной разновидности счастья. Все элементы постановки - от актеров до декораций, от диалогов до операторской работы - прекрасны и отмечены печатью совершенства. Великолепная партитура Бернарда Херрманна. Сопровождая авторские размышления, она подчеркивает содержащийся в картине лиризм, иногда сгущая его до взрывного состояния.
