18 -into o in to?-
Nota d'usoInto e in to vengono spesso confusi. In to deve essere scritto con due parole quando in è un avverbio che fa parte del verbo frasale, mentre to è una preposizione che introduce un complemento, una subordinata o un'infinitiva: I looked in to (non into) see him while I was passing, gli diedi un'occhiata mentre passavo; She turned him in to (non into) the authorities, lo consegnò alle autorità. Si scrive into (tutto attaccato) quando è una preposizione, che indica in genere moto a luogo o una trasformazione: Come into my room, vieni nella mia stanza; The witch turned him into a frog, la strega lo trasformò in una rana. -
19 -to pretend o to expect?-
Nota d'usoNell'uso comune, il verbo to pretend non significa “pretendere”, ma “fingere, simulare”: He pretended to eat the frog, ha fatto finta di mangiare la rana. Per esprimere il concetto di “pretendere”, “aspettarsi qc.” si usa di norma il verbo to expect: What do you expect?, che cosa pretendi?; You expect a lot, pretendi molto. -
