54 tutoiement
tutoiement [tytwamɑ̃]masculine nounuse of (the familiar) "tu" (instead of "vous")━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━TUTOIEMENT/VOUVOIEMENTThere are no hard-and-fast rules about when to use « tu » or « vous » to address people. Small children can be addressed as « tu », and will often reply using the « tu » form as well. In informal contexts among young people of the same age, « tu » is often used even at first meeting. Among the older generation, « vous » is standard until people know each other well. As a general rule for non-native speakers, « vous » should always be used to address adults until the other person uses « tu », or asks permission to do so.* * *tytwamɑ̃nom masculin use of the form ‘tu’* * *tytwamɑ̃ nmuse of familiar "tu" form* * *tutoiement nm use of the form ‘tu’.[tytwamɑ̃] nom masculinuse of the familiar "tu" -
55 verlan
verlan [vεʀlɑ̃]masculine noun━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━Verlan is a kind of backslang that has become extremely popular among young people in France. It consists of inverting the syllables of words, and often then truncating the result to make a new word. The slang words « meuf », « keuf », « keum » and « beur » are verlan renderings of the words « femme », « flic », « mec » and « Arabe ». The expression « laisse béton » (forget it) is verlan for « laisse tomber », and the word verlan itself comes from the expression « à l'envers » (back to front).* * *is a form of French slang which reverses the order of syllables in many common words rendering them more or less incomprehensible to the uninitiated. For example, the term itself is derived from the word l'envers the syllables of which are reversed to create vers-l'en which in turn becomes verlan. Single syllable words are also converted so femme becomes meuf, mec becomes keum, etc. A recent coinage for énervé is vénère* * *vɛʀlɑ̃ nm* * *verlan nm: form of French slang.ⓘ Verlan is a form of French slang which reverses the order of syllables in many common words rendering them more or less incomprehensible to the uninitiated. 59 Tutoyer
To use the pronoun tu rather than vous - a concept that English-speakers often find hard to master correctly, tutoyer means addressing someone using the familiar singular tu form of the second person pronoun, rather than the more formal vous form. Fifty years ago, in formal family circles, children would address their parents using vous rather than tu; this practice has now more or less completely disappeared, and tutoiement is the common form of address within families and within groups of friends or workplace colleagues who know each other. The change is generational, and President Sarkozy has brought tutoiement right into the formal surroundings of presidential affairs. Vouvoiement (using vous) remains the norm in formal circumstances, when addressing a hierarchical superior, a stranger or someone with whom one has only occasional working relations - though the French are now quite used to speakers of other languages, notably English-speakers, getting it wrong.Usage in France varies from usage in Quebec, where speakers often use "tu" as a singular form of "vous" to address each other even in a business context or between strangers.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais.
