The Archbishop: "I prophesy now that you will be hanged... if you do not learn when to laugh and when to pray." Bluebeard: "My lord: I stand rebuked. I am sorry: I can say no more. But if you prophesy that I shall be hanged, I shall never be able to resist temptation because I shall always be telling myself that I may as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb." (B. Shaw, ‘Saint Joan’, sc. Richard: ".When you make up your mind to hang a man, you put yourself at a disadvantage with him. Why should I be civil to you? I may as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb."

60 oneself
I'll go and see for myself.
Let the child eat by himself. —
One has only oneself to blame. — ◊
One has to be careful not to hurt oneself using this instrument. (I, you, he, she, we, they), в паре с которыми выступают соответствующие возвратные местоимения (myself, yourself, himself, herself, ourselves, themselves): You must be careful lest you should cut yourself with this sharp knife. (2.) Возвратное местоимение, в отличие от аналогичных конструкций в русском языке, не употребляется после предлогов места beside, behind, in front of, before, around. She closed the door behind her. He saw a house in front of him. He put the bag beside him. (3.) Предложные обороты by oneself и for oneself имеют различные значения. By oneself означает сделать что-либо самостоятельно, своими руками, без посторонней помощи; for oneself употребляется после глаголов see, judge, think, decide, find out и имеет значение своим умом, собственными глазами: I can't decide for you, you must judge (decide) for yourself. (4.) See confuse, v
