Контркультура родилась как социальный протест молодежи из среднего класса против существовавшего образа жизни и политических ценностей общества в 50-60-х годах XX в. Социальной основой протеста было участие США в войне во Вьетнаме [ Vietnam War] и осуждение молодежью общества, которое без сопротивления позволило втянуть себя в войну. Открытому протесту предшествовало скрытое недовольство излишествами "общества процветания" [ affluent society]. Движение за гражданские права [ civil rights movement] и движение против войны во Вьетнаме [ antiwar movement] высветили пороки системы. Рок-музыка [ rock music] и распространение свободного воспитания привили молодежи вкус к свободе поведения при том, что между 1950 и 1960 число студентов удвоилось и достигло 5 млн. человек, а существовавшие к этому времени богемные круги дали молодежи яркие образцы вызывающего поведения. Типичными представителями контркультуры стали хиппи [ hippies], а также "люди-цветы" [ flower people]: они бросали вызов обществу своими длинными волосами, пристрастием к наркотикам и рок-музыке.
