45 DEFLATION
(дефляция) Общее падение уровня цен; противоположность инфляции (inflation). Как и в случае с инфляцией, общее изменение уровня цен теоретически не должно оказывать реального эффекта. Однако, если у коммерсантов имеется запас товаров, цены на которые упали, они могут понести столь значительные убытки, что будут вынуждены объявить о своем банкротстве. В то же время, положение экономических агентов, обладающих деньгами, резко улучшается, хотя между падением цен и увеличением расходов может возникнуть лаг, в течение которого произойдет спад производства (recession). Единственным примером значительной дефляции в нынешнем столетии является падение цен во время Великой депрессии 1920-1930-х гг. С того времени правительства стремятся, по мере сил, избегать дефляции.
