κύβος, ὁ, 1) cubus, Würfel; bes. – a) der Würfel zum Würfelspiel, welcher auf allen sechs Seiten bezeichnet ist (der αστράγαλος war nur auf vier Seiten bezeichnet); Her. 1. 94; ἐν πτώσει κύβων Plat. Rep. X, 404 c; Sp. – Auch die mit Eins bezeichnete Sein des Würfels, ἢ τρὶς ἓξ ἢ τρεῖς κύβους βάλλοντες Plat. Legg. XII, 968 e, vgl. Aesch. frg. 130 u. Poll. 9, 95. – Κύβον ἀναῤῥίπτειν wird oft übertragen gebraucht, den Würfel werfen, wagen, aufs Spiel setzen; ἀπειρίᾳ καὶ ϑρασύτητι τὸν περὶ τῶν ὅλων ἀναῤῥίψων κύβον Plut Fab. 14; ἔσχατον κύβον ἀφιέναι, sein Glück zum letzten Male versuchen.
