22 Anatolian Carpets
These are small-size rugs or mats made in various parts of Asia Minor. A characteristic is their soft, long and full pile, due to the quality of the long-stapled wool used, chiefly that yielded by the Caraman sheep. The pile is tied in Giordes knot and the designs and colours are in great variety. They have fringes at each end and selvedges at both sides. Narrow and long pieces are also made for stair carpets. -
23 Angora Carpets
Carpets made at Kir-Sheha in the province of Angora, are all wool and of brilliant red and green colours; the ground warp and weft are of dyed wool yarns and the long pile wool is tied in Giordes knot. The sides and ends are "selvedges" - no fringes. Designs are of Arabic styles. -
24 Baluchistan Carpets
Indian-made carpets. Goat's hair yam is used for pile on a jute or cotton ground. The pile has a beautiful lustre, finer, even than silk. Patterns are of the fantastic geometrical character. 27 Chilim Carpets
The best type of carpets made in Servia by the peasant women. The groundwork is usually brilliant red, with patterns woven in blue, purple, green, yellow and other colours. There is no pile and the surface is smooth and hard. Originally vegetable dyes made by the weavers were used, but the imported dyes now used have proved a detriment to the native dye industry. -
28 Cinema Pile Carpets
The pile used for making the carpets for cinemas is short, but thick. About 4 in in depth is common The yarn is two-ply 3/14's worsted on a cotton ground. Dark grounds with large floral effects are usual to emphasise the fine velvety face. The term applied to the woollen carpets formerly exported from India. Made by caste weavers in brilliant colours (see Madras Rugs) -
30 Daghestan Carpets
Woollen carpets and rugs, made from the wool of sheep, native to the Caucasian mountains. Such wool is of a regular structure and gives a good pile. The designs are geometrical and mosaic in style and moderately close in the knotting which is the Ghiordes knot. Many angular hooks appear in the design in blue, red, yellow and ivory. Both ends of each rug has a knotted fringe and the sides have a narrow stripe. -
31 Donegal Carpets
Carpets made on the vertical loom, by Irish village workers of Donegal. They are hand-knotted fabrics of good quality and heavy structure. They are made 8 threads 2-ply 8 skeins warp per inch, and 2-ply 5 skeins weft. The pile weft is 3-ply 3 skeins tied in Ghiordes knot. The tufts are about 2-in. long and give a pile of over 1/2-in., with 16 tufts per square inch. -

Cotton carpets woven by the natives in Patna, India, in original designs. All hand work, using Indian cotton. -
33 Hali Carpets
The Turkish name for large-size Oriental floor carpets. -
34 Indian Carpets And Rugs
Carpets made by native Indians from wool, with silk inserted at times. Woven on native looms and entirely by hand. The colour and design are all in the weft. Colours are inserted as required by the design from bobbins, and in the form of small tufts. They are very expensive. The designs are chiefly floral in more or less natural form. 35 Ingrain Carpets
These are usually 36-in. wide and made from two- or three-fold yarns. This class is the oldest form of machine-made carpet now woven. They are two-ply fabrics, and the pattern is formed by one cloth passing through the other - The two cloths being of different colours. Woven on jacquard looms which have drop shuttle boxes for as many as six colours. They are very expensive, but very enduring, and either side can be used. Scottish or Kidderminster carpets come under this term. -
36 Jubbulpur Carpets
Native-made Indian carpets that once were famous for their quality, but have deteriorated very much. Originally they had a very strong cotton or hemp foundation and a pile of wool knotted in closely. -

The vernacular term by Eastern carpet weavers for the tufted hand-woven carpets and rugs. -

39 Kirman Carpets And Rugs
Small size, all-wool pile native-made carpets, practically extinct, due to the demand for cheaper articles. The pile is tied in Senna knot and this was one of the finest styles made in India. A pattern of red roses very gracefully worked with a centre medallion was the favourite motif. Borders also had the red roses. The warp was cotton. 40 Namad Carpets
Felted carpets of Persia and India. Produced in single colours or ornamented with inlaid work with coloured felt in floral or geometric design. Those made at Tabriz are ornamented with coloured wools felted into them in regular arabesque designs. The wool is spread out evenly on a Kamrii and then moistened with gum and rolled backwards and forwards -with a wooden roller until the layer of wool is thoroughly felted.
