Nota d'usoNon è corretto tradurre attenzione con “attention” quando si vuole indicare un pericolo imminente. In questo caso, infatti, si utilizzano le locuzioni “be careful” e “watch out”, o il verbo “to mind”: Attenzione il pavimento è ancora bagnato, be careful the floor is still wet, (non attention, the floor is still wet), Mind the gap, attenzione al gradino. Anche su cartelli o segnali stradali vengono usati altri sostantivi, come “caution” (per indicare un pericolo) o “warning” (per avvisi): Attenzione: attraversamento bambini, caution: children crossing; Attenzione: i taccheggiatori verranno perseguiti a norma di legge, warning: shoplifters will be prosecuted. La parola “attention” viene utilizzata quando si vuole richiamare l'attenzione nei confronti di qualcuno che parla: Posso avere la vostra attenzione, prego?, can I have your attention, please? Inoltre, l'espressione fare (o prestare) attenzione si traduce con “pay attention”: Fai particolare attenzione alla grammatica, pay particular attention to the grammar. -

Nota d'usoPerson ha un plurale regolare, persons, utilizzato esclusivamente in contesti formali, in particolare in ambito legale, e ricorre spesso sugli avvisi: This cab is licensed to carry a maximum of four persons, questo taxi può trasportare un massimo di quattro persone. Nell'inglese di ogni giorno, “persone” si traduce con people: I can give two people a lift, posso dare un passaggio a due persone. Anche se grammaticalmente è un sostantivo singolare, people va sempre concordato con il verbo al plurale: There were a lot of people, c'era tanta gente (non There was a lot of people). People possiede anche il significato di “popolo”, e in questa accezione ha un suo plurale, peoples: the peoples of Europe, i popoli d'Europa. -
