БИБЛИОГРАФИЮ) хорошо сформулировал, в чем именно заключается уникальность картины: «Главная проблема Нетерпимости и ее отличие от подавляющего большинства фильмов в истории кино в том, что в основе ее конструкции - намеренная разнородность художественного материала… Группы персонажей и ситуаций, в реальности никак не связанных друг с другом, заключаются в одно пространство (на экран кинозала) - вот в чем вся скандальность Нетерпимости… Фильм Гриффита создает напряжение между разнородностью художественного материала и тем рациональным подходом, с которым этот материал собран и объединен».Всякий любитель кино (я говорю о подлинном кино, какое живет в самых долговечных своих творениях) хорошо поймет, что если бы это напряжение стало всеобщим законом, оно бы наверняка спровоцировало смерть хрупкого и постоянно подвергающегося опасностям искусства: смерть именно как искусства, смерть на всех этапах его развития. Кинематограф понял, что за 2, 3 и даже 4 часа показа невозможно рассмотреть, понять и разъяснить, а тем более - привязать к некоей отдельной и особенной теме разные исторические и политические события, бесконечно сложные сами по себе и вдобавок происходящие в разные эпохи. Он понял, что его призвание - изучать, словно под микроскопом, маленькие пространства; иногда - чуть большие, но всегда ограниченные строгими рамками и одним углом зрения (посмотрите, с какой восхитительной строгостью и точностью делается это, например, в первых Десяти заповедях, The Ten Commandments Де Милля, которые также строятся на метафорическом переносе действия в разные эпохи). Будучи по природе ближе к рассказу, чем к роману или эпопее, ближе к 1-актной пьесе, чем к трагедии в 5 актах, кинематограф уже на ранних этапах своей истории осознал, что его величие кроется в скромности, а сила - в деталях. Показателен тот факт, насколько единодушны историки прежних (напр., Садуль) и новых времен (напр., Пьер Бодри) - такое единство взглядов встречается крайне редко - в указании различных стилистических заимствований (то подтверждаемых, то отрицаемых самим Гриффитом), определивших особенности формы каждой части. Эпизод с Христом вызывает в памяти Страсти, Passions - серию живых картин назидательного характера, выпущенных компанией «Pathe» около 1900 г. (в особенности ту из них, что сняли в 1902 г. Зекка и Нонге). Эпизод Варфоломеевской ночи ссылается на работы студии «Films d'Art» (***) и в 1-ю очередь - на знаменитую картину Ле Баржи и Кальметта Убийство герцога де Гиза, L'assassinat du duc de Guise, 1908, у которой Гриффит позаимствовал суровую и торжественную театральность, так впечатлившую кинематографистов всего мира, в особенности - Дрейера. Падение Вавилона явно вдохновлено первыми итальянскими историческими драмами на сюжеты античности: Камо грядеши, Quo vadis, 1912 Гваццони и Кабирией, Cabiria, 1914 Пастроне, с которыми Гриффит мечтал сравняться. Но с точки зрения эстетического развития кинематографа, этот фильм стоит далеко в стороне от тех живых сил, которые позволили этому виду искусства сохраниться в веках и обозначить свою территорию.N.B. Существует почти столько же вариантов монтажа Нетерпимости, сколько сохранилось копий. С 1919 г. мы не располагаем целым оригинальным негативом. Гриффит бесконечно переделывал фильм, в особенности - для повторного проката в 1926 и 1933 гг. Последняя по времени из имеющихся копий была показана Раймоном Рохауэром в Нантерре в 1985 г. Это копия хорошего качества, продолжительностью 151 мин при скорости пленки 20 к/сек. Изображение на ней сопровождается настоящей оргией «тонирования», весьма модного в то время (местами оно встречается в каждом плане), но не дающего в полной мере насладиться работой Билли Битцера.
