Basée à Paris, l’AFP (Agence France-Presse) est la plus ancienne agence de presse au monde et la troisième en importance, après l’AP (Associated Press) et Reuters. L’AFP est présente dans 165 pays (110 bureaux et 50 correspondants locaux), avec 2.000 salariés de 81 nationalités différentes, dont 1.000 journalistes texte et photo. Elle fournit des contenus pour les médias nationaux et internationaux (presse écrite, télévision, radio et web), les entreprises et les administrations. Elle distribue l’information en six langues: français, anglais, allemand, espagnol, portugais et arabe. L’AFP est entièrement numérisée en 1993. Elle lance son premier journal internet en français en 1996, puis des journaux internet en anglais et en espagnol en 1999 et en portugais en 2000. Suit un service d’actualité vidéo pour la France en été 2001. L’AFP lance aussi un journal multimédia en chinois avec l’Agence CAN de Taïwan en octobre 2000, et le premier site d’information interactif au Japon avec Softbank en février 2006. Un nom de domaine est une chaîne de caractères alphanumériques permettant d’identifier un site web, et donc son serveur sur le réseau, au lieu d’une suite de chiffres (correspondant à l’adresse IP – internet protocol) qu’il serait beaucoup plus difficile de mémoriser. Par exemple, le nom de domaine de l’Agence France-Presse (AFP) est: www.afp.com, et la suite de chiffres: 185.65.0.1. Ce sont les serveurs du système des noms de domaine (DNS: domain name system) qui gèrent le trafic sur le réseau mondial. Le système des noms de domaine est régi au niveau international par l’ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). En mai 2007, 120 millions de noms de domaine sont enregistrés auprès de l’ICANN, dont 40 millions avec des extensions de pays (.be,.ca,.ch,.fr,.qa, etc.).
