  • 11 Knop Yarn

A fancy yarn with lumps or thick places appearing at intervals. The knops can be either the same colour as the ground thread or in other colours. It consists of one or more foundation yarns usually two-ply and a coarse hard-twisted yarn, the latter forms the knops. The foundation yarn is delivered slowly at intermittent speed while the delivery of the coarse yarn is quicker and continuous resulting in the intermittent accumulation of this thread which forms the knops. A third thread may be doubled with the former group with twist in the opposite direction and about half the turns. Knop yarn is used to ornament numerous fabrics and is most often used as weft.

  • 12 Double Spun Yarn

A single yarn made as a cheap imitation of a two-fold yarn by being subjected to two separate twistings. The term really signifies double twisting. The yam is spun on the mule with soft twist and, weft way, then gassed and again twisted at the ring doubler weft way. Thus the twist at the ring doubler is added to the twist at the mule. It is a super quality yarn and spun free from knots and other faults, superior to the ordinary single-twist, but not equal to two-fold. It is of greater strength than ordinary yarn.

  • 13 Woollen Yarn

A term which originally denoted carded wool yarn spun from wool fibre unsuitable for combing or rejected as noil from the wool combing machine. Now it denotes an infinitely varied class of yarns spun from virgin wool, re-used wool and other materials mixed in every conceivable manner, and prepared for spinning by carding and condensing. Woollen yarns are coarser than worsted and owing to the omission of combing in preparing the yarn for spinning, the component fibres are not parallelised, hence the yarns are fuller and have more projecting ends of fibres due to the presence of a greater proportion of short fibres. Woollen yarn spinning is a means of making serviceable yarns from fibres too short to be used by the worsted method of yarn preparation.

  • 14 Boucle Yarn

Has a curled or loop effect and largely used to produce the boucle cloth. These yarns are usually three-fold. May be produced by either of two methods. The yarn may be three-fold, and during doubling, one of the strands is delivered faster than the other two, or a two-fold yarn is prepared and one of the strands is fed at a greater speed to produce the loop, then this doubled yarn is twisted with a single fine thread which binds the loops in position.

  • 15 Chain Yarn

A three-fold yarn made from a thick soft spun thread twisted with another thread of finer counts and a medium twist. This double thread is again twisted with a third and still finer thread, but with the twist in the reverse way. The illustration shows a cloth in which a chain yarn is used for figuring, Both warp and weft are utilised and by weaving these fancy yarns on an open ground cloth a reversible fabric is obtained. The ground cloth is 36 X 40 per inch, 50's/50's cotton yarns and figuring cham yarn 12 X 12 per inch (see Yarns)

  • 16 Combed Cotton Yarn

The best qualities of cotton yams are combed. The operation of combing removes the short fibres and impurities not removed by carding, and gives a yarn that is stronger, cleaner, smoother and more lustrous than a carded yarn. It is more expensive than carded yarn. Ordinary combing gives about 15 per cent of waste, super combing gives about 18 to 19 per cent, and double combing 24 to 25 per cent (see Combing)

  • 17 Crossband Yarn

Yarn in which the twist runs from right to left looking up the yarn. It is opposite to open-band yarn. See Open Band.

  • 18 Flat Crepe Yarn

A regular flat crepe yarn has a large number of turns per inch, so that when the fabric is finished it will have a real crepe effect. The turns are 50 to 55 per inch and the yarn is generally used 2 picks right-hand, 2 picks left-hand twist. (See French Crepe Yarn.)

  • 19 Germantown Yarn

This yarn is made from very soft-twisted woollen yarn in the single, and then run three-ply on the twister, putting from three to four turns of twist to the inch. Gives a full, thick, soft yarn, used for hand knitting, etc. Originally made in Germantown, U.S.A.

  • 20 Linen Yarn

Linen or flax yarn is very strong and weaves well, although it has little elasticity. It can be bleached to a snowy white (See also Flax). (See Dry and Wet Spinning). Boiled Linen Yarn has been boiled in soda lye and there is a loss in weight of from 5 to 10 per cent. Creamed Linen Yarn is first boiled, then treated with bleaching powder and the loss in weight is 10 to 12 per cent.
