Lancé par France Télécom en 1982, le minitel est un terminal permettant la consultation de serveurs à domicile moyennant finances, grâce à un accès par Télétel, le réseau vidéotex français. Cette consultation est fortement encouragée par l’Etat français, qui distribue gratuitement des millions de terminaux. L’opération minitel est un succès, contrairement à des opérations similaires menées dans d’autres pays (Prestel en Angleterre, BX en Allemagne et Alex au Canada) qui, elles, ne remportent pas le succès escompté. A la fin des années 1990, on compte 6 millions de minitels et 20.000 services actifs. Lorsque l’utilisation du web se généralise, de nombreux serveurs minitel sont consultables sur le web ou sont remplacés par des serveurs web, avec les avantages qu’offrent une consultation meilleur marché, une plus grande facilité de navigation et l’ajout de fonctions multimédias. Toutefois, en 2006, il subsiste 2,9 millions de minitels et 5.000 services actifs, preuve que ce service se porte toujours bien malgré la concurrence de l’internet.
