{Английское слово "wild" имеет, в частности, значения "дикий; дикорастущий; некультивированный" и "девственная природа; лоно природы" (поэт.).} Слово (которого в английском языке не существует), построенное на основе "wilderness" (слово, первоначально означавшее землю диких животных, не населенную людьми), но также отсылающее к глаголам "wilder" ("блуждать") и "bewilder" ("путать(ся)"). Предполагается, что это название Rhovanion на всеобщем (см. карту, в тексте этого нет), земель к востоку от Misty Mountains (включая Mirkwood), вплоть до реки Running. В голландском переводе – Wilderland: в голландском языке, в отличие от немецкого и скандинавских языков, есть "wildernis" (в немецком – "Wildnis", в датском – "vildnis").
