Occasionally used in the form «Лавры Мильтиада не дают спать». -

(Плутарх. Изречения лакедемонянок, 15) Mit dem Schild oder auf dem Schild (Plutarch. Aussprüche der Laikedaimonierinnen). Die Lakedaimonierinnen, d. h. die Frauen Spartas, zeichneten sich, wie antike Geschichtsschreiber berichten, durch Heimatliebe, Mut, Willenskraft und Zurückhaltung im Ausdruck ihrer Gefühle aus. Nach dem Bericht Plutarchs soll eine spartanische Frau, die von ihrem ins Feld ziehenden Sohn Abschied nahm, diesem seinen Schild mit den lakonischen Worten gereicht haben: Damit oder darauf (sollst du zurückkehren)!, d. h. entweder als Sieger oder tot (gefallene Krieger wurden im alten Griechenland auf ihrem Schild vom Schlachtfeld getragen).
