Принадлежит к индейским языкам пенутианской группы Плато [ Plateau Penutian]; включает языки шести племен, из которых ныне существуют кликитат [ Klikitat], молала [ Molala], тенино [ Tenino] и языки племен кламат [ Klamath] и модок [ Modoc], объединенные в ветвь лутуами [Lutuami(an)].
