Encarta est l’encyclopédie multimédia lancée par Microsoft en 1993, d’abord sur CD-Rom, et ensuite en parallèle sur le web. Présente sur le portail MSN (MicroSoft Network), la version web est en consultation payante, avant de devenir gratuite en septembre 2000. Encarta est maintenant disponible en deux versions. La première, MSN Encarta, reste gratuite. La deuxième, MSN Encarta Premium, plus complète, est payante. Par ailleurs, l’encyclopédie est toujours vendue sur CD-Rom (compact disc - read only memory) et DVD (digital versatile disc). En février 2005, dans le but de concurrencer Google et Yahoo! Search, Microsoft lance son propre moteur de recherche, MSN Search, avec une version bêta disponible dès novembre 2004. MSN Search est ensuite rebaptisé Live Search (connu aussi sous le nom de Windows Live ou Windows Live Search). En novembre 2006, 8% des recherches effectuées dans un moteur de recherche sont effectuées sur Live Search, 6% sur AOL, 25% sur Yahoo! et 50% sur Google. En décembre 2006, Microsoft lance la version bêta de sa propre bibliothèque numérique, Live Search Books. -

Fondée en avril 1975 au Nouveau-Mexique (Etat des Etats-Unis) par Bill Gates et Paul Allen, la société Microsoft se spécialise dans les logiciels pour ordinateur personnel (ou PC: personal computer). Elle s’impose au fil des ans comme la première société informatique mondiale, au détriment de la société Apple (auteur du Macintosh) et de bien d’autres. En 1981, le système d’exploitation MS DOS (MicroSoft disc operating system) équipe le premier PC d’IBM. En 1983, Microsoft commercialise la première version de Windows. En 1989, Microsoft lance une division multimédia pour développer des produits culturels (par exemple l’encyclopédie Encarta) et des jeux. En 1995, Microsoft lance son navigateur Internet Explorer. En avril 2000, Microsoft lance son propre PDA (personal digital assistant), le Pocket PC, qui intègre le logiciel de lecture Microsoft Reader. En août 2000, le Microsoft Reader est disponible pour toute plateforme Windows, et le logiciel du Pocket PC équipe de nombreuses gammes de PDA lancées par d’autres constructeurs. En octobre 2004, Microsoft lance MSN Music, son site de vente de musique en ligne. En février 2005, Microsoft lance son propre moteur de recherche, MSN Search, rebaptisé ensuite Live Search. En novembre 2006, Microsoft lance son baladeur de musique Zune.
