Joost est un service de télévision sur l’internet (à la fois un logiciel et une plateforme) permettant de regarder les chaînes de télévision sur son ordinateur, avec une programmation personnalisée et une technologie de diffusion en mode P2P (peer-to-peer). Le site en phase bêta est mis en ligne en janvier 2007, avec lancement officiel en mai 2007. Joost est la nouvelle start-up lancée par Niklas Zennström et Janus Friis, créateurs de Kazaa (service de musique en ligne) et Skype (service de téléphonie sur l’internet), et spécialistes du P2P (peer-to-peer) à grande échelle. Joost veut marier la télévision et l’internet en offrant un logiciel simple, un large choix de programmes disponible à tout moment et un service gratuit financé par la publicité. -

Lancé en août 2003 par Niklas Zennström et Janus Friis, Skype est un service gratuit de téléphonie sur l’internet. Pionnier de la téléphonie sur IP (internet protocol), Skype signe les débuts d’une nouvelle ère, celle de la téléphonie internet simple et gratuite. Conçu par la même équipe et selon le même principe que Kazaa, le très populaire logiciel d’échange de fichiers musicaux, Skype est un logiciel permettant de téléphoner gratuitement en mode P2P (peer-to-peer) à toute personne utilisant le même logiciel. Le succès est au rendez-vous. En janvier 2005, Skype est utilisé par près de 30 millions de personnes, avec 140.000 téléchargements par jour. Le logiciel est disponible pour les plateformes Windows, Mac et Linux. Les abonnés peuvent passer des appels vers des téléphones portables ou fixes, par le biais du service payant SkypeOut, à des prix défiant toute concurrence. En avril 2005, pour un prix modique, on peut également avoir un numéro de téléphone "classique" (SkypeIn) et une messagerie vocale (Skype Voicemail). Deux services inaugurés pour fêter les 100 millions de téléchargements du logiciel. Le début de la fin, donc, pour la téléphonie à un prix prohibitif. Fin 2005, Skype est racheté par eBay, géant du commerce en ligne, pour 2,6 milliards de dollars US, et poursuit son expansion avec l’introduction de nouveaux services. En décembre 2006, Skype compte à son actif 4,4% des appels internationaux à l’échelle mondiale. En janvier 2007, Niklas Zennström et Janus Friis lancent Joost, un service de télévision sur l’internet en mode P2P. -

La télévision est un "dispositif de transmission instantanée d’images, par câble ou par ondes hertziennes" (encyclopédie Encarta). Auquel s’ajoutent ensuite le satellite, avec ses paraboles ornant les toits et les balcons, puis le câble. En 1996, la télévision se marie avec l’internet grâce au système web TV, qui permet de se connecter directement à l’internet à partir de son téléviseur. Peu après, on peut aussi regarder la télévision sur l’écran de son ordinateur. Au début des années 2000, tout comme pour l’ordinateur, l’écran LCD (liquid crystal display) ultra-plat concurrence l’écran cathodique classique. On assiste également aux débuts de la télévision numérique, notamment avec la DTTV (ou DTT: digital terrestrial television). En 2006 apparaissent les grands écrans branchés à l’ordinateur pour contempler tout à loisir les vidéos et films choisis sur le web. En mai 2007 débute une nouvelle ère télévisée avec le lancement de Joost, un service gratuit de télévision sur l’internet permettant de regarder les grandes chaînes de télévision sur son ordinateur. -

SUBJECT AREA: Electronics and information technology[br]b. 1550 Merchiston Castle, Edinburgh, Scotlandd. 4 April 1617 Merchiston Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland[br]Scottish mathematician and theological writer noted for his discovery of logarithms, a powerful aid to mathematical calculations.[br]Born into a family of Scottish landowners, at the early age of 13 years Napier went to the University of St Andrews in Fife, but he apparently left before taking his degree. An extreme Protestant, he was active in the struggles with the Roman Catholic Church and in 1594 he dedicated to James VI of Scotland his Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of St John, an attempt to promote the Protestant case in the guise of a learned study. About this time, as well as being involved in the development of military equipment, he devoted much of his time to finding methods of simplifying the tedious calculations involved in astronomy. Eventually he realized that by representing numbers in terms of the power to which a "base" number needed to be raised to produce them, it was possible to perform multiplication and division and to find roots, by the simpler processes of addition, substraction and integer division, respectively.A description of the principle of his "logarithms" (from the Gk. logos, reckoning, and arithmos, number), how he arrived at the idea and how they could be used was published in 1614 under the title Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio. Two years after his death his Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Constructio appeared, in which he explained how to calculate the logarithms of numbers and gave tables of them to eight significant figures, a novel feature being the use of the decimal point to distinguish the integral and fractional parts of the logarithm. As originally conceived, Napier's tables of logarithms were calculated using the natural number e(=2.71828…) as the base, not directly, but in effect according to the formula: Naperian logx= 107(log e 107-log e x) so that the original Naperian logarithm of a number decreased as the number increased. However, prior to his death he had readily acceded to a suggestion by Henry Briggs that it would greatly facilitate their use if logarithms were simply defined as the value to which the decimal base 10 needed to be raised to realize the number in question. He was almost certainly also aware of the work of Joost Burgi.No doubt as an extension of his ideas of logarithms, Napier also devised a means of manually performing multiplication and division by means of a system of rods known as Napier's Bones, a forerunner of the modern slide-rule, which evolved as a result of successive developments by Edmund Gunther, William Oughtred and others. Other contributions to mathematics by Napier include important simplifying discoveries in spherical trigonometry. However, his discovery of logarithms was undoubtedly his greatest achievement.[br]BibliographyNapier's "Descriptio" and his "Constructio" were published in English translation as Description of the Marvelous Canon of Logarithms (1857) and W.R.MacDonald's Construction of the Marvelous Canon of Logarithms (1889), which also catalogues all his works.
