(BOL: Bertelsmann On Line)Le géant des médias allemands Bertelsmann lance en 1998 BOL.com, une grande librairie en ligne avec des succursales dans plusieurs pays, dont BOL.fr, lancé en juillet 1999 en partenariat avec la multinationale française Vivendi. Deux ans plus tard, en juillet 2001, BOL.fr ferme définitivement ses portes, du fait de la concurrence des autres librairies en ligne françaises déjà présentes sur le marché (notamment Alapage, Chapitre.com et Amazon.fr). En 2003, BOL.com est présent dans huit pays (Allemagne, Chine, Italie, Japon, Pays-Bas, Royaume-Uni, Suède, Suisse). En 2005, BOL.com est présent dans six pays (les mêmes, moins le Japon et la Suède). -
2 Vivendi
La multinationale française Vivendi (ex-Générale des Eaux) s’intéresse au livre et à l’internet. En juillet 1999, Vivendi s’associe avec le géant des médias allemand Bertelsmann pour lancer BOL.fr (BOL: Bertelsmann On Line), succursale de la librairie en ligne européenne BOL.com. Soumise à une forte concurrence de la part des autres librairies en ligne françaises (Alapage, Chapitre.com, Amazon.fr, etc.), cette succursale ferme deux ans après. En 2000, Viventures, la division financière de Vivendi, finance en partie Mobipocket, société parisienne spécialisée dans la lecture et la distribution sécurisée de livres numériques sur PDA (personal digital assistant). En décembre 2000, Vivendi fusionne avec Canal+ et Seagram pour devenir Vivendi Universal. Basé à Paris et à New York, Vivendi nouvelle formule est un géant de la communication et des médias présent dans la musique, la télévision, la cinéma, l’édition, les télécommunications et l’internet. En juillet 2002, la démission forcée de Jean-Marie Messier, le très médiatique P-DG (président-directeur général) de Vivendi Universal, marque l’arrêt des activités fortement déficitaires liées à l’internet et au multimédia, et la restructuration de la société vers des activités plus traditionnelles. Le P-DG suivant est Jean-René Fourtou, nommé en janvier 2003. -
3 Bertelsmann
Géant des médias allemands, Bertelsmann se lance dans le numérique en 1997. En mai 1997, il passe un partenariat avec Barnes & Noble (qui possède un réseau de 480 librairies aux Etats-Unis) pour lancer la librairie en ligne Barnes & Noble.com, afin de concurrencer la grande librairie en ligne Amazon.com. Au printemps 1998, Bertelsmann poursuit sa progression sur le marché américain en acquérant le grand éditeur Random House. Bertelsmann s’associe aussi avec Barnes & Noble pour financer NuvoMedia, société californienne qui lance le premier appareil de lecture dédié, dénommé Rocket eBook. (Nuvomedia est ensuite racheté par Gemstar TV-Guide International.) Toujours en 1998, Bertelsmann ouvre la grande librairie européenne en ligne BOL.com ( BOL: Bertelsmann On Line), avec des succursales dans plusieurs pays. Suite à la récession de la "nouvelle économie" au début des années 2000, Bertelsmann décide de mettre un frein à ses activités internet et multimédias en août 2002, afin de réduire son endettement. La société se recentre sur le développement de ses activités traditionnelles, notamment sa maison d’édition Random House et l’opérateur européen de télévision RTL. En juillet 2003, Bertelsmann vend à Barnes & Noble (B&N) les parts qu’il détenait dans B&N.com (36,8% des parts) pour la somme de 164 millions de dollars US. -
