Lehrs Aristarch. ed. 2 p. 121; verschieden von ζωστήρ; Iliad. 4, 187 εἰρύσατο ζωστήρ τε – ἠδ' ὑπένερϑεν ζῶμά τε καὶ μίτρη, vgl. 4, 216. 23, 683; Od. 14, 482 heißt es σάκος οἶον ἔχων καὶ ζῶμα φαεινόν, worauf 488 folgt οὐ γὰρ ἔχω χλαῖναν u. οἰοχίτων. – Gürtel, Soph. El. 444; Ep. ad. 114 (VI, 272). – Die Atticisten erklären diese Form für attisch u. ζῶσμα für hellenistisch.

(ἄ-, εὔ- etc.) ζωστός `girded' (Hes.).Etymology: The verbal adjective ζωστός has an exact parallel in Av. yāsta-, Lith. júostas, IE * ieh₃s-tos. In Balto-Slavic we find yot-presents Lith. júosiu (inf. júosti), OCS. po-jašǫ (inf. - jasati) `gird', in Iranian a secondary formation ( aiwi-)yāŋhayeiti `id.' (IE *i̯eh₃seieti). A rest of the athematic root present perhaps in (Thess.) ζούσθω ζωννύσθω H.; it agrees with OLith. 3. sg. pres. juos-ti. There is no agreement for the nasal prssent ζώννυμι \< *ζώσ-νυ-μι (on the phonetics Schwyzer 282 and 312) outside Greek. - Further close agreements are ζῶμα (\< IE *i̯eh₃s-mn̥) and Lith. juosmuõ `loin-, life-girdle' (IE i̯eh₃s-mṓ[n]), ζώνη ( *i̯eh₃s-nā) and Russ.-Csl. po-jasnь `id.' ζωστήρ, ῆρος, ὁ, der Gürtel; in der Il. der Leibgurt der Krieger, welcher unterhalb des Brustpanzers, ϑώραξ, über den Hüften, den Bauch u. die Weichen deckt; er war an den Panzer mit Haken od. Schlössern befestigt, ὅϑι ζωστῆρος ὀχῆες χρύσειοι σύνεχον καὶ διπλόος ἤντετο ϑώρηξ Il. 4, 132. 20, 415; er war wahrscheinlich mit Metall von künstlicher Arbeit belegt u. heißt daher δαιδάλεος, παναίολος, 4, 135. 186; auch φοίνικι φαεινός, 7, 305; vgl. noch 11, 236 οὐδ' ἔτορε ζωστῆρα παναίολον, ἀλλὰ πολὺ πρὶν ἀργύρῳ ἀντομένη μόλιβος ἃς ἐτράπετ' αἰχμή, wo aus dem vorhergehenden Verse κατὰ ζώνην ϑώρηκος ἔνερϑεν νύξε hervorgeht, daß ζωστήρ u. ζώνη (s. oben) dasselbe bedeuten. Od. 14, 72 ist es der Gürtel, mit dem der Sauhirt den Rock fester gürtet, wenn er ausgehen will, vgl. Theocr. 7, 18. Nach Aristarch. von ζῶμα unterschieden, Lehrs Aristarch. ed. 2 p. 121. Th. 37 (IX, 421) ἃς (νήσους) κελαδεινὸς ζωστὴρ Αἰγαίου κύματος ἐντὸς ἔχει. – Bei den Aerzten ein Hautausschlag rings um den Leib, Plin. H. N. 26, 11, vgl. ζώνη. – Beim Schiffe, Bretter, die rings um das Schiff laufen u. es zusammenhalten, Hel. 1, 1 u. a. Sp., vgl. ὑπόζωμα. – Bei Theophr. eine Art Meertang.
