) the Arcadian, Artem.2.3, cf. Poll.7.61 (where [full] τηβεννίς is prob. cj. for τημενίς); but D.H.3.61 expressly doubts its Hellenic origin. (The form of the word, and the context in D.H. l.c., suggest that it is Etruscan, but K. O. Müller's conjecture Τυρρηνοί for τύραννοι in EM756.26 is doubtful.)Greek-English dictionary (Αγγλικά Ελληνικά-λεξικό) > τήβεννα

6 ἀπήνη
Grammatical information: f.Other forms: πήνα· ἀπήνη H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Unknown. The first question is the relation with πήνα ἀπήνη H.; apocopated acc. to Strömberg Wortstudien 45; thus Fur. 374: the analysis must be ἀπ-ηνη; but rejected by Winter Prothet. Vokal 13 (if the ἀ- is a proth. vowel, the word would be a substr. word). Then there is the synonym καπᾱ́νᾱ (Xenarch. 11, Thess.), s. Güntert Reimwortbildungen 152; the agreement is remarkable, the word is hardly IE. Fur. 224 n. 96 compares γάπος ὄχημα. Τυρρηνοί H. He also adduces (285) λαμπήνη id. (with λαπίνη, which shows prenasalization; on λ\/zero see Fur. 392). Further one has compared ἀμανάν ἅμαξαν H. There is also Myc. apenewo, which would be drawing animals; but ἀπήνη will have -ᾱνᾱ. Bănăt̨eanu REIE 3, 141 thought the word is Anatolian (which amounts to saying that it is a substr. word), which DELG considers possible (but not because ἄμαξα is IE, q.v.!); Szemerényi, JHS 94 (1974) 149f. thought it could be Semitic. - The comparison with καπάνα is the most convincing and shows foreign (substr.) origin (κ-\/zero Fur. 391f.).Page in Frisk: 1,121Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἀπήνη

7 βυρρός
Grammatical information: m.Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably] Etr.Etymology: Thought to derive from the colour, from Gr. πυρρός, = Lat. burrus `deep red' (Paul. Fest. 31). Fohalle Mélanges Vendryes 157f., also Kretschmer Glotta 16 (1928)166. However, this is hardly adequate in the case of a pot. Fur. 213 connects μύρσος `basket' (Call. fr. anon. 102; H.), Etr. murś; the word lives on in Otrant. vurro, Toscan. borraccia (Alessio, Le lingue, 736).Page in Frisk: 1,277Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > βυρρός

9 καπᾱνα
καπᾱ́ναGrammatical information: f.Meaning: Thessalic word for `waggon' = ἀπήνη (Xenarch. 11, H.), -η `cross-bar of the waggon (?)' (Poll. 1, 142), καπᾶναι ( καπαλαί cod.) φάτναι H.Derivatives: καπάναξ `side-piece of the waggon-box ' (Poll. ibid.; cf. δίφραξ from δίφρος); καπανικώτερα adjunct of Θετταλικά ( δεῖπνα) in Ar. Fr. 492, in Ath. 9, 418d = ἁμαξιαῖα `filling a waggon', acc. to H. as alternative = χορταστικώτερα, ἀπὸ τῆς φάτνης `more foodful, more plenteous' (LSJ, from καπάνη = κάπη). - Unclear καπάνη τριχίνη κυνῆ, καπάνια ἁρπεδόνες, καπαλίζει ζευγηλατεῖ H. - Here also Καπανεύς EN? (Boßhardt Die Nom. auf - ευς 121).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Prob. prop. `chest', formation in -ᾱνᾱ (Chantraine Formation 206; cf. esp. ἀπήνη) from κάπη, κάπτω?, s. v. καπάνα reminds of Gallorom. capanna (Alessio Studi Etr. 19, 175 n. 34). Kuiper Μνήμης χάριν 1, 213 n. 9 compared ἀπήνη, with κ\/zero, which means that the word is Pre-Greek, which seems more probable. Fur. 224 n. 96 compares γάπος ὄχημα. 10 μύρσος
Grammatical information: adj.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: No convincing etymology. H. Petersson (s. WP. 2, 273; negative) compares βρόχος (s.v.) or OSwed. miær-dher `bow-net' etc. (s. μάραθον) with υ as zero grade as in μύλη; after P. here also μόργος `body of a wicker cart' (other explanation s.v.). Diff. Grošelj Živa Ant. 5, 112 (to Etr. murś `urna'). After Forbes Glotta 36, 271 LW [loanword] from unknown source.
