41 λίνον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `linen, flax, linen-cloth, (linen) thread, cord, fishing-net' (Il.).Compounds: Several compp., e.g. λινο-θώρηξ `with linen cuirass' (Il., AP), λινό-ζωστις f. `mercury, Mercurialis' (Hp., Dsc.; f. from a compound *λινο-ζώσ-της; cf. Strömberg Pflanzennamen 148), λευκό-λινον n. `white flax' (Hdt.).Derivatives: Diminut.: λινάριον `thread, net' (Delos IIa., D. Chr.), λινούδιον `linen cloth' (pap.), prob. from τὸ λινοῦν ( ἱμάτιον); also λινούτιον (pap.; cf. below). Adject.: λίνεος, - οῦς, - ός (IA.; λινέα, - αία f. `cord, noose' hell.), λίνινος (Tanagra IIIa) `linen', λιναῖος `id., of flax' (Hp., pap.), λινική f. `flax-taxes' (pap.). Verbs: λινεύω `catch with net' (Peripl. M. Rubr.); further late hypostases: δια-, ἐκ-, ἐπι-λινάω `slip through the net, get away from the net, inspect the net' (Phryn., Eust., H.), ἐκ-λινίζω `get away from the net' (Byz.). On λινεύς = κεστρεύς s. v. - Extensive on compp. and derivv. (also from Middel- and NGr.) Georgacas Dumbarton Oaks Papers 13, 253ff., esp. on λινούδιον, - ούτιον (S. 260ff.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: With λίνον with short vowel agree the Balto-Slavic forms, e.g. Lith. linaĩ pl. `flax, linen', Russ. lën, gen. lьná `id.' Opposite is Lat. līnum with long vowel, from where as loans Celt., e.g. OIr. līn `net' and Alb. li-ri, lį-ni `linen'. The Germ. words too, Goth. lein, ONo. OE OHG līn agree with Lat. līnum and are therefore to be considered as loans. Original identity is however possible, as the cultivation of flax in Middle-Europe is very old. It is however more probable that λίνον and līnum derive from a Mediterranean word, which as name of a new type, perhaps together with new techneques of preparation in Northern and Eastern Eeurope replaced local types and their names (e.g. ONo. hǫrr = OHG haro, OE fleax = OHG flahs, Russ. polotnó = CSl. platьno). In Indo-Iranian the word is (but not the idea) unknown. 48 KIRKJA
* * *(gen. pl. kirkna), f. church.* * *u, f., gen. pl. kirkna; [Scot. kirk; Dan. kirke; Germ. kirche; but Engl. church]I. a kirk, church; timbr-k., a timber church; stein-k., a stone church; the earliest Scandin. churches were all built of timber, the doors and pillars being ornamented with fine carved work, see Worsaae, Nos. 505–508; in the 12th and following centuries the old timber churches were one by one replaced by stone buildings. In Denmark the last timber church was demolished at the beginning of the 17th century, but in Norway some old churches (called stav-kyrkior) have remained up to the present time, see an interesting essay in Nord. Aarb. 1869, p. 185 sqq. Many passages in the Sagas refer to the building of churches, especially in records of the years following after 1000, see esp. Ld. ch. 74 sqq.; a curious legend, for the purpose of encouraging men to build churches, is told in Eb. ch. 49,—that a man could grant as many souls a seat in heaven as the church which he built held persons; ok þegar er þingi var lokit (the summer of A. D. 1000) lét Snorri goði göra kirkju at Helgafelli, en aðra Styrr mágr hans undir Hrauni, ok hvatti pat mjök til kirkju-görðar, at þat var fyrirheit kennimanna, at maðr skyldi jafnmörgum eiga heimolt rúm í himinríki, sem standa mætti í kirkju þeirri er hann lét göra, Eb. l. c. For the removal of a church, when all the graves were to be dug up and the bones ‘translated’ to the new church, see Eb. (fine), Bjarn. 19. 55 elda
1. originally adj. "of the stars", but wholly replaced WJ:362 by: 2. noun Elda = one of the people of the Stars, high-elf, an Elf SA:êl, elen, Letters:281, ELED, ÉLED; notice that Tolkien abandoned a former etymology with "depart", chiefly in the pl. Eldar WJ:362, cf. GATH, TELES.The primitive form Tolkien variously cited as ¤eledā/ elenā Letters:281, PE17:152 and ¤eldā WJ:360. Partitive pl. Eldali VT49:8, gen. pl. Eldaron WJ:368, PM:395, 402;dative pl.eldain "for elves", for Eldar FS; possessive sg. Eldava "Elf's" WJ:407; possessive pl. Eldaiva WJ:368, Eldaivë governing a plural word WJ:369. The word Eldar properly refers to the non-Avari Elves only, but since Eldar rarely had any contact with the Avari, it could be used for "elves" in general in LT1:251, Elda is simply glossed "Elf". See also Eldo. The plural form Eldar should not require any article when the reference is to the entire people; i Eldar refers to a limited group, all the Elves previously named; nevertheless, Tolkien in some sources does use the article even where the reference seems to be generic i Eldar or i-Eldar, VT49:8. -
56 MAN
I) n.1) household, house-folk; bondslaves;2) bondwoman, female slave; þær ‘ro máttkar meyjar at mani hafðar, these mighty maids are held in bondage;* * *n., does not occur in plur. unless it be in gen. pl. mana, Stor. 13 (mͣ in MS.); [man is an ancient word only used in old laws and poetry, it remains in the compd man-sal, and in the Icel. local name Man-heimar; ‘man’ (ἀνδράποδον), being neuter and having but one n, is prob. of different origin from mann (ἄνθρωπος, ἀνήρ), which is masc. and has a double final n. The etymology of this word is lost in the remotest antiquity; it appears in the O. H. G. mana-houbit = a bondman’s head, a ‘serf’s head;’ (Grimm in R. A. expresses a doubt as to the current etymology of Lat. man-cipium from manu-capere; perh. man and caput?). In early Swed. law the word occurs twice or thrice, næmpnæ man, næmpnæ quicfæ, Schlyter i. 134; in Gutalagen—kauper tu mans man i garth thin (i. e. mans-mann = a bondman, cp. mans-manna and mans-maðr, see Schlyter’s Glossary).]B. A bondman, prob. originally of prisoners of war who were sold as slaves (Irish in the west, Finns and Slaves in the east), see Ld. ch. 12, Ó. T. (Fms. i. ch. 92); svá ok ef hann vill í mani gjalda, tva aura fyrir einn, ok á hann lausn á maninu en næstu misseri ef hann hefir upp alit, Grág. i. 396; kaupa man ok gefa frelsi, N. G. L. i. 5, 6; ok þat fé skal hálft vera í gulli ok í silfri en hálit í mani hérrænu ( native bondmen) eigi ellra en fertogu, né yngra en fimmtán vetra, SS; mans leiga, 224; ok heimta hann sem annan mans-mann, K. Þ. K. 58; mani austrænu, eastern slaves, Hornklofi; máttkar meyjar at mani hafðar, Gs. 1, 15; er þú man keyptir, 8; hálfa aðra alin fyrir frjálsgjafa, penning veginn fyrir man-manna, N. G. L. i, 347; næst kirkju-garði skal grafa man-manna, 345; maðr manna, no doubt false for man-manna, 388; er hann réttlauss við hann ok hans konu ok man hans allt, 36, Am. 66; þar kom mart man falt, þar sá Loðinn konu nokkura er seld hafði verit mansali, Fms. i. 185: allit., mold ok man, N. G. L. iii. 92, v. l.II. a girl, maid, as also in a worse sense, a mistress, for bondwomen often became their master’s mistresses (see Ld. ch. 12), so that this sense grew out of the preceding one; líki leyfa ens ljósa mans, Hm. 91; í myrkri skal við man spjalla, 81; et horska man, 101; et manunga man, 163; þat et unga man, þat et mjallhvíta man, Alm. 6, 7; bjarthaddað man, Skv. 1. 33; harðúðigt man, 27; fóstr-man, a bondwoman nurse, 3. 67; mans at kosta, Hbl. 16; hvé ek at andspilli komumk ens unga mans, Skm. 11; hve ek fyrir-banna manna glaum mani, manna nyt mani, how I ban her from all concourse with men, 34; Ylfinga man, Hkv. 2. 3; Yggjar man, the beloved of Ygg (Odin) = the Earth, Lex. Poët.; Héðins man = Hilda, the beloved of Hedin, Fms. ix. (in a verse); bjarnar man, a giantess, Stor. 13. It is probable that in some law phrases the obso- lete ‘man’ has been replaced by the common ‘mann,’ e. g. in gefa manni frelsi (mani? cp. manfrelsi), N. G. L. i. 5: as also in mana-kaup in the Swed. law, see Schlyter’s introd. to the 10th vol. of Sver.
