müssen, bezeichnen die Lateiner in verschiedenen Beziehungen verschieden, u. zwar: I) durch das Partizip des Fut. Pass., zur Angabe derjenigen Notwendigkeit, deren Wahrnehmung sich aus den jedesmaligen Umständen von selbst ergibt, z.B. man muß sterben, moriendum est. – Die Person, von der etw. geschehen muß, wird durch den Dativ ausgedrückt, höchst selten durch ab, u. zwar immer nur da, wo ein zweiter Dativ Undeutlichkeit verursachen könnte, z.B. jeder muß sein Urteil zu Rate ziehen, suo cuique iudicio utendum est: es gilt die Güter vieler Bürger, für die ihr es euch angelegen sein lassen müßt, aguntur bona multorum civium, quibus a vobis consulendum est. – Ist das Verbum ein Transitivum, so wird das Objekt in den Nominativ verwandelt und das Parti zip in gleichem Geschlecht hinzugefügt, [1723] z.B. der Redner muß drei Punkte berücksichtigen, tria videnda sunt oratori.
II) durch oportet (unpersönl., δεῖ), zur Angabe derjenigen Notwendigkeit, die aus Gründen der Vernunft oder aus den Gesetzen des Rechts, der Billigkeit od. Klugheit hervorgeht. In bezug auf die Konstruktion ist zu bemerken, daß bald der Akk. mit Infin., bald der bloße Konjunktiv (bes. wenn Zweideutigkeit vermieden werden soll) folgt, z.B. dieser Mensch muß schlecht sein, hunc hominem oportet esse improbum: man muß (darf) im Kriege nichts verachten, nihil in bello oportet contemni: der Besitzer muß sich wohl befinden, wenn er darauf bedacht ist, das wohl Erworbene gut anzuwenden, valeat possessor oportet, si comparatis rebus cogitat uti.
III) durch debere, zur Angabe derjenigen Notwendigkeit, die eine moralische Verpflichtung, ein Schuldigsein, ein Sollen nach subjektiver Ansicht bezeichnet, z.B. du mußt ihn wie deinen Vater ehren, eum patris loco colere debes. – Da nun das debere nicht weit über das officium hinausgeht, so sagen die Lateiner auch für »jmd. muß« officium est alcis u. bl. est alcis (doch mit dem Untersch., daß alcis officium est es gehört zu jmds. Obliegenheiten, hingegen est alcis es schickt sich für jmd., bedeutet), z.B. ein Fremder muß bloß seine Angelegenheiten betreiben, peregrini officium est nihil praeter suum negotium agere: ein guter Redner muß viel gehört und viel gesehen haben, est boni oratoris multa auribus accepisse, multa vidisse. – ich, du, ihr müßt, bl. meum, tuum, vestrum est.
IV) durch putare, existimare, censere, wenn der Redner mit einer Art von Höflichkeit dem Urteile seiner Zuhörer nicht vorgreifen, sie selbst die Schlußfolge ziehen lassen will, dah. bes. in der Frage. z.B. seht, wie weit es mit der Republik kommen muß. videte, quem in locum rem publicam perventuram putetis: wie viele Inseln mußten verlassen werden? quam multas existimatis insulas esse desertas?: welcher glühende Eifer muß nicht den Archimedes beseelt haben, der etc.? quem ardorem studii censetis fuisse in Archimede, qui etc.
V) durch opus est (unpersönlich), zur Angabe eines subjektiven Bedürfnisses, von dessen Erfüllung man Nutzen erwartet. – Es folgt entweder der Akk. mit Infin. oder, wenn man die Person, die etw. muß, im Dativ hinzusetzt, ut mit Konj. oder Ablat. des Partizips des Pers. Pass. oder der Nomin. oder Abl. eines Subst., z.B. wenn etwas vorfallen sollte, was du wissen mußt, so werde ich schreiben, si quid erit, quod te scire opus sit, scribam: ich muß mich waschen, mihi opus est, ut lavem: ich mußte den Hirtius aufsuchen, opus fuit Hirtio convento. – wir müssen einen Führer und Leiter haben, dux et auctor nobis opus est: wir müssen dein Ansehen gebrauchen, auctoritate tuā nobis opus est.
VI) durch necesse est (unpers., ἀνἀγκη ἐστί), zur Angabe der strengsten Notwendigkeit, derunter keinerlei Bedingung ausgewichen werden kann, »notwendig, unvermeidlich müssen«. Es folgt ebenfalls entweder der Akk. mit [1724] Infin. oder (gew. mit Dativ der Person) der bloße Infin. od. der bloße Konjunktiv, z.B. die sterbliche Hülle muß notwendig zu einer gewissen Zeit untergehen, corpus mortale aliquo tempore perire necesse est: der Mensch muß unvermeidlich sterben, homini necesse est mori: die Tugend muß (notwendig) das Laster verabscheuen und hassen, virtus necesse est vitium aspernetur et oderit.
VII) durch cogi m. ut u. Konj. od. m. Infin., zur Angabe der Nötigung durch beseelte Wesen od. durch deren Willensäußerung, z.B. er mußte sich selbst das Leben nehmen, coactus est, ut vitā ipse se privaret: die Kampaner mußten aus den Toren rücken, coacti sunt Campani portis egredi. – Auch durch das Aktivum cogere, z.B. nicht wie er wollte, sondern wie er nach dem Willen der Soldaten mußte, non ut voluit, sed ut militum cogebat voluntas.
VIII) durch facere non possum od. bl. non possum mit folg. quin u. Konj.; od. fieri non potest m. folg. ut non u. Konj.; od. non possum non m. folg. Infin., zur Angabe des nicht Umhinkönnens, der innern Nötigung, z.B. ich muß ausrufen, non possum, quin exclamem: du mußt ibn gekannt haben, fieri non potest, ut eum non cognoris: ich muß gestehen, daß meiner Freude die Krone aufgesetzt wird etc., non possum non confiteri, cumulari me maximo gaudio, quod etc. – so auch »ein jeder muß«, nemo potest non mit folg. Infin., z.B. ein jeder muß höchst glücklich sein, der etc., nemo potest non beatissimus esse, qui etc.
IX) durch das Verbum schlechthin, u. zwar: a) im Indikativ, indem die Lateiner im erzählenden Ton oft die Umstände, unter denen das im Verbum enthaltene Prädikat gedacht werden soll, dem Nachdenken des Lesers überlassen, z.B. er mußte die gesetzliche Strafe nicht ganz aushalten, hic legitimam poenam non pertulit. – ich muß gestehen, eingestehen, fateor, confiteor: ich muß bedauern, doleo: ich muß mich wundern, miror: ich muß mich höchlich verwundern, vehementer admiror: ich muß sehen, video: ich habe etw. durchmachen, über mich ergehen lassen müssen, perfunctus sum alqā re: ich muß befürchten, daß nicht etc., vereor, ut non: ich muß mein Vaterland mei den, careo patriā: nur das eine muß ich bemerken, unum illud dico. – b) im Konjunktiv, wenn die nur gedachte Notwendigkeit ausgedrückt werden soll, z.B. ein Umstand, bei dem nicht allein Gebildete, sondern auch rohe Menschen erröten müssen, o rem dignam, in qua non modo docti, verum etiam agrestes erubescant. – c) bald im Indikativ, bald im Konjunktiv in der Verbindung, welcher (welche, welches) muß... wenn oder widrigenfalls nicht etc., qui nisi od. qui... nisi, s. Vic. Verr. 4, 25; ad Att. 7, 17, 2.
Außerdem bemerke man noch folgende Wendungen, bei deren Übersetzung der lateinische Sprachgebrauch vom Deutschen abweicht, und zwar: a) er, sie, es mußte, wenn es = »hätte müssen«, d. i. wenn ausgedrückt werden soll, daß etwas in der Vergangenheit hätte geschehen sollen, was nicht geschehen ist, bezeichnen die Lateiner durch den Indikativ der oben angegebenen Wendungen, z.B. entweder mußte [1725] man den Krieg nicht anfangen (hätte man den Krieg nicht anfangen müssen) od. man mußte (hätte müssen) ihn nach der Würde des röm. Volks führen, aut non suscipi bellum oportuit aut geri pro dignitate populi Romani: du hättest diesen Weg einschlagen müssen, haec via tibi erat ingredienda: du hast den mit Schmähungen aller Art überhäuft, den du als Vater hättest ehren müssen, omnibus eum contumeliis onerasti, quem patris loco colere debebas. – In dieser Beziehung folgt nach oportet häufig das Partizip des Pers. Pass., um auszudrücken, daß etwas in seinen Folgen noch fortdauert, z.B. man hätte dem Jüngling willfahren müssen, adulescenti morem gestum oportuit. – b) es mußte sich treffen od. zutragen, daß etc., od. es mußte gerade, casu accĭdit oder forte evenit, ut etc. – c) du mußt (als ausdrückliche Aufforderung), durch den Imperativ od. durch fac mit folg. Konjunktiv, z.B. wenn ihr hiermit nicht zufrieden seid, so müßt ihr eure Ungerechtigkeit anklagen, haec si vobis non probabuntur, vestram iniquitatem accusatote: du mußt guten Mut und gute Hoffnung hegen, magnum fac animum habeas et bonam spem. – du mußt nicht (als nachdrückliche Abmahnung), fac, ne etc. (mache, daß nicht etc.); cave, ne mit folg. Konj. (hüte dich, daß od. zu etc.); noli mit folg. Infin. (wolle nicht), z.B. du mußt nicht wünschen, cave ne cupias: du mußt nicht vergessen, daß du Cicero bist, noli te oblivisci Ciceronem esse. – d) es müsse (zur Angabe eines dringenden Wunsches), durch den Konjunktiv, z.B. es müsse dir zu deinem Wohl gereichen, sit tibi hoc saluti. – e) es müßte dennsein, daß etc., od. ich (du, er, es) müßte denn etc. (zur Angabe einer Voraussetzung), nisi (wenn nicht); nisi forte (wenn nicht etwa), z.B. du müßtest denn etwas dagegen haben, nisi quid habes ad haec: ihr müßtet denn glauben etc., nisi vero existimetis etc.: es müßten mich denn etwa die Winde aufhalten, nisi forte venti me morabuntur. – f) daß doch... mußte (beim Unwillen), durch den bloßen Akk. u. Infin., z.B. daß sich das gerade jetzt ereignen mußte! hoc nunc maxime accĭdere!: daß der Mann doch jetzt gerade kommen mußte! istumvirum nunc quidem venire! – g) wenn es sein muß (in der Zukunft), si res ita feret.
