Sie entstand, als Henry VIII. 1532 mit der römisch-katholischen Kirche brach und sich selbst zum Oberhaupt der englischen Kirche erklärte. In ihrer Verfassung und in ihrer Liturgie kombiniert die anglikanische Kirche katholische und protestantische Elemente. In Schottland ist die Established Church die Church of Scotland, eine Presbyterian Church - presbiterianische Kirche, die im 16. Jh. von dem kalvinistischen Reformator John Knox stark beeinflusst wurde. Church elders - Älteste geben zusammen mit dem minister - Pfarrer auf Gemeindeebene die Richtung vor, und eine demokratisch organisierte General Assembly - Generalversammlung bestimmt den Kurs auf nationaler Ebene. In Irland und Wales gibt es keine Staatskirche.
