    Il sostantivo boy si riferisce a un bambino-ragazzo fino ai 16-18 anni. Passata questa età, per evitare di sembrare scortesi, è preferibile usare altri appellativi, come young man, fellow, chap, bloke, lad, ecc. Il termine boys può essere usato dagli adulti per riferirsi al proprio gruppo di amici (maschi): I'm going to the pub with the boys, vado al pub con i ragazzi. Tuttavia, un estraneo che si riferisce a un gruppo di amici (maschi), non li chiamerà boys, ma lads o chaps: Hey lads!, ehi ragazzi! In presenza di un gruppo formato da uomini e donne, si utilizza comunemente il sostantivo guys: Are the guys coming?, vengono i ragazzi?
