A friend in need is a friend indeed. — Друзья познаются в беде

    - be in need of help
    - be badly in need of smth

    II [niːd]
    1) нуждаться, иметь необходимость, иметь надобность, иметь потребность
    - need a book
    - need advice
    - children need milk
    2) требовать, нуждаться
    3) (модальный глагол, обозначающий разрешение не делать что-либо, употребляется только в отрицательной форме)
    - you needn't go there
    USAGE:
(1.) Глагол to need 1. с одушевленным подлежащим соответствует русскому нуждаться, иметь потребность в чем-либо и употребляется в конструкциях to need smth и to need doing smth: we don't need any outside help, we can manage ourselves нам не нужна никакая посторонняя помощь, мы справимся сами. (2.) Глагол to need 2. при неодушевленном подлежащем в конструкции to need doing smth соответствует русскому требовать, нуждаться: your coat needs pressing ваше пальто надо погладить. Русское требовать, нуждаться относительно неодушевленных предметов также может передаваться глаголами to want и to require в конструкциях to want doing smth, to require smth и to require doing smth: the suit needs/wants pressing костюм надо погладить; the house needs/wants repairing дом требует ремонта; the job requires skill (patience, time, experience) работа требует умения (терпения, времени, опыта). (3.) В отличие от полнозначного глагола to need, модальный глагол имеет только отрицательную форму needn't и употребляется с последующим инфинитивом без частицы to. Needn't обозначает разрешение не делать чего-либо, отсутствие необходимости что-либо делать. В русском языке он соответствует выражениям можно не, не надо делать что-либо: you needn't come, if you don't want to можно не приходить, если не хотите; he needn't get up so early ему не надо вставать так рано. Это же значение может быть передано отрицательной формой модального глагола to have: he doesn't have to get up so early. (4.) For need 2.; See want, v (5.) For need 3.; see have, mod. v; USAGE (3.).
