  • 8 Les mesures de longueur

    Le système métrique est de plus en plus utilisé en Grande-Bretagne et aux États-Unis pour les mesures de longueur. Mais les anciennes mesures ont encore cours, et sont quelquefois préférées, notamment pour les distances, exprimées en miles, et non en kilomètres. Les commerçants utilisent en général les deux systèmes.
    Équivalences
    1 inch = 2,54 cm
    1 foot = 12 inches = 30,48 cm
    1 yard = 3 feet = 91,44 cm
    1 furlong = 220 yards = 201,17 m
    1 mile = 1760 yards = 1,61 km
    Pour la prononciation des nombres, voirLes nombres.
    dire dire
    one millimetre 1 mm 0.04 in* inches
    one centimetre 1 cm 0.39 in
    one metre 1 m 39.37 ins
    3.28 ft feet†
    1.09 yds yards
    one kilometre 1 km 1094 yds
    0.62 ml miles
    * Le symbole de inch est ": 4 inches = 4".
    Le symbole de foot et feet est ': 5 feet 4 inches = 5' 4".
    Pour l’écriture, noter:
    - on écrit -metre en anglais britannique, mais -meter en anglais américain;
    - pour le système métrique, les abréviations sont les mêmes en anglais qu’en français;
    - l’anglais utilise un point là où le français a une virgule.
