nCultural note: FEDERAL COURT Negli Stati Uniti esistono le federal courts in cui si svolgono i processi per le violazioni alle leggi federali e quelli in cui il reato vede coinvolto più di uno stato, e le "state courts" per i reati contro le leggi statali. Così come ha un proprio sistema giudiziario, ogni stato ha infatti il potere di legiferare (sempre nel rispetto della Costituzione e delle leggi federali). Negli Stati Uniti non esiste la distinzione fra tribunale penale e civile. La maggior parte delle controversie federali viene giudicata nelle "district courts", mentre 12 "Courts of Appeal" giudicano in appello le cause provenienti dalle "federal courts" di grado inferiore. Il tribunale superiore, sia a livello federale che statale, è la "Supreme Court".
