10 Academy aperture
сущ.; киноIn the early 1950's, television's demand for feature films increased. The typical television display provides a fixed aspect ratio of 1.33:1 (4 x 3) and many of the films shown on television, to fill the picture height, lost a substantial part of the image when this was "matted off" at the edges. To rectify this incompatibility, the "Academy aperture" was introduced. The Academy aperture produced an image of greater height so that it would fill a television screen without compromising the width. The usual procedure when filming productions for both theatrical release and conventional television transmission is called "shoot and protect".

11 sustainable development
Gen Mgtdevelopment that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The concept of sustainable development was introduced by the Brundtland Report, the first report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, established by the United Nations in 1983. It advocates the integration of social, economic, and environmental considerations into policy decisions by business and government. Particular emphasis is given to social, cultural, and ethical implications of development. Sustainable development can be achieved through environmental management and is a feature of a socially responsible business. -

principle of sustainability
Principle stated by the World Commission on Environment and Development (The Bruntland Commission) in 1987: development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. Sustainable development is a process of integrating economic, social and ecological goals, and should not mean a trade-off between the environment and development. Sustainable development should imply balance rather than conflict. (Source: GRAHAWa)

15 Emotion
.. propose that reason may not be as pure as most of us think it is or wish it were, that emotions and feelings may not be intruders in the bastion of reason at all: they may be enmeshed in its networks, for worse and for better. The strategies of human reason probably did not develop, in either evolution or any single individual, without the guiding force of the mechanisms of biological regulation, of which emotion and feeling are notable expressions. Moreover, even after reasoning strategies become established in the formative years, their effective deployment probably depends, to a considerable extent, on a continued ability to experience feelings. This is not to deny that emotions and feelings can cause havoc in the processes of reasoning under certain circumstances. Traditional wisdom has told us that they can, and recent investigations of the normal reasoning process also reveal the potentially harmful influence of emotional biases. It is thus even more surprising and novel that the absence of emotion and feeling is no less damaging, no less capable of compromising the rationality that makes us distinctly human and allows us to decide in consonance with a sense of personal future, social convention, and moral principle. (Damasio, 1994, p. xii)Historical dictionary of quotations in cognitive science > Emotion
