[huː]1) (si può anche usare al posto di "whom" nella lingua parlata: interrogative) chiwho should it be but Graham! — chi poteva essere se non Graham!
who's the book by? — chi è l'autore del libro?
who are you looking for? — chi stai cercando?
who is it? — chi è?
I know who it was — io so chi è stato
who does she think she is? fam — chi si crede di essere?
2) (relative) chewho can swim — quelli che sanno nuotare, chi sa nuotare -
7 -who o whom?-
Nota d'usoLa regola tradizionale è che who è un pronome soggetto, mentre whom è pronome complemento oggetto e indiretto: the woman who came to dinner last night, la donna che è venuta a cena ieri sera; He's a man whom people find they can talk to easily, è un uomo a cui la gente pensa si possa parlare con facilità. Però l'uso di who al posto di whom è molto diffuso nel parlato, soprattutto nelle domande, e in contesti non formali: Who are you looking for? chi stai cercando? Se whom è legato a una preposizione, anche se la frase è interrogativa, la regola tradizionale stabilisce che non ne deve essere separato, per evitare che la frase finisca con la preposizione: For whom was the report intended? a chi era destinata la relazione? Però si tratta di una regola molto controversa e contestata: la forma alternativa (Who was the report intended for?) è largamente accettata. -

Nota d'uso1 Quando i pronomi chi, ( che) cosa, che, quale o quanto sono il soggetto di una proposizione interrogativa, diretta o indiretta, nella corrispondente frase inglese l'ausiliare to do di norma non si usa: Chi te l'ha detto?, who told you? (anziché who did tell you?); Che cosa accadde al testimone?, what happened to the witness? (anziché what did happen to the witness?); Quale funziona meglio?, which of them works better?; Mi chiese quale funzionasse meglio, he asked me which of them worked better (anziché he asked me which of them did work better).Lo stesso vale quando il soggetto è un nome preceduto da un aggettivo interrogativo ( che, quale, quanto): Quante persone hanno assistito al concerto?, how many people attended the concert? (anziché how many people did attend the concert?); Ignoro quante persone abbiano assistito al concerto, I don't know how many people attended the concert.L'ausiliare to do (come accade anche nelle frasi affermative) è usato solo nei casi, abbastanza rari, in cui si intende dare particolare enfasi all'enunciato: Allora, chi è stato a dirtelo? (o Chi mai te l'ha detto?), who did tell you?; Che cosa accadde effettivamente al testimone?, what did happen to the witness?2 Quando i pronomi e gli aggettivi interrogativi non sono soggetto, nelle proposizioni interrogative dirette l'ausiliare to do deve essere usato e precede il soggetto: A chi l'hai detto?, who did you tell?; Che cosa pensate dell'idea?, what do you think about the idea?Lo stesso vale per gli altri ausiliari e il verbo to be: Chi siete?, who are you? (you è il soggetto, who il nome del predicato); Che CD hai acquistato?, what CD have you bought?Nelle proposizioni interrogative indirette l'ausiliare to do invece non si usa e il verbo to be e gli altri ausiliari normalmente non precedono il soggetto: Mio fratello le chiese che cosa volesse, my brother asked her what she wanted (non My brother asked her what did she want); Non so chi siano, I don't know who they are (non I don't know who are they).Tuttavia, se il soggetto è composto da parecchie parole, può accadere che sia preceduto anziché seguito da to be o dall'ausiliare: Le chiesi chi fosse il ragazzo con cui aveva parlato tutta la sera, I asked her who was the boy she had been talking to the whole evening (in alternativa a I asked her who the boy she had been talking to the whole evening was). -
