"Уэллс-Фарго энд Ко."Финансово-банковская компания и один из крупнейших в США коммерческих банков. Основана в 1852 Г. Уэллсом [ Wells, Henry] и У. Фарго [ Fargo, William George] для предоставления почтовых услуг, грузопассажирских перевозок на дилижансах [ stagecoach], банковской деятельности и торговли товарами повышенного спроса в штатах Тихоокеанского побережья. К 1866, после покупки компании "Оверленд мейл" [ Overland Mail Company] и других фирм, стала фактическим монополистом почтовых и пассажирских перевозок к западу от р. Миссисипи [ Mississippi River]. Компания с успехом приспособилась к появлению сети железных дорог. После Гражданской войны [ Civil War] расширила свою деятельность на востоке страны, действуя в качестве партнера компании "Американ экспресс" [ American Express Co.], а также в Канаде и странах Латинской Америки. Почтовый бизнес компании был серьезно подорван после 1912, когда федеральные власти организовали собственную посылочную службу, а в 1918 все почтовые отделения "Уэллс-Фарго" отошли к фирме "Американ рейлуэй экспресс" [American Railway Express Co.]. В 1905 из компании выделился банк "Уэллс-Фарго" [Wells Fargo Bank] с правлением в Сан-Франциско, и на его основе в 1968 была создана холдинговая фирма "Уэллс-Фарго" [Wells Fargo Co.].
