    Сигнал данных, у которого каждый из представляющих параметров описывается функцией дискретного времени и конечным множеством возможных значений.

    Для того чтобы представить аналоговый сигнал последовательностью чисел конечной разрядности, его нужно сначала преобразовать в дискретный сигнал, а затем квантовать. В результате сигнал будет представлен таки образом, что на каждом заданном временном промежутке времени будет определено приблизительное (квантованное) значение сигнала, которое можно записать целым числом. Если записать эти целые числа в двоичной системе, то получится последовательность нулей и единиц, которая и будет цифровым сигналом.
