(wide area information servers)Utilisé avant l’apparition des moteurs de recherche sur l’internet, WAIS (wide area information servers) est un système de recherche sur les index de bases de données situés sur des serveurs accessibles à distance. La recherche est effectuée en utilisant le protocole Z39.50. Créé par Brewster Kahle et Bruce Gilliat en 1991, WAIS est vendu en 1995 à AOL (America OnLine) pour 15 millions de dollars US. Brewster Kahle et Bruce Gilliat fondent ensuite l’Internet Archive en avril 1996.
