Минимальный размер заработной платы в час периодически изменялся со времени принятия Закона о справедливых условиях труда 1938 года [ Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938]. Так, в 1949 он был установлен на уровне 75 центов, а в 1974 на уровне 2,25 доллара. Периодически приводится в соответствие с индексом потребительских цен [ consumer price index]. В 2003 минимальный размер заработной платы в час составлял 5,15 долларов. Это не относится к работникам предприятий малого бизнеса с годовым доходом менее 500 тыс. долларов. Инфляционная спираль/спираль цен и заработной платы
Рост темпов инфляции, обусловленный взаимодействием двух факторов: ростом цен и увеличением факторных затрат. Ситуация развивается следующим образом. Резкий скачок цен на товары и услуги, вызванный ростом расходов на сырье, приводит к тому, что профсоюзы начинают требовать повышения зара- ботной платы. Если они добиваются своей цели, производители, чтобы сохранить уровень своей прибыли, вынуждены со временем повышать цены на свою продукцию. Тогда новый рост цен вновь приводит к пересмотру тарифных ставок оплаты труда и т.д. Таким образом, ситуация повторяется на новом витке спирали. См.
