"Daß bei einem Worte dieser Bedeutung sich kein bestimmtes Vorbild der Entgleisung nachweisen läßt, ist nicht verwunderlich." (Frisk; unclear to me). Old ablaut (Bq) is impossible, cf. WP. 2 396 with criticism of older suggestions. αι \> η is typical for Pre-Greek; Beekes, Pre-Greek.
