Например, дарение чего-либо лицу А в пожизненное владение, а затем переход этого чего-либо к лицу Б означает, что права лица А являются закрепленными в порядке непосредственного пользования (vested in possession), поскольку в данный момент он владеет имуществом. Дарение лицу Б также закреплено (однако не в порядке непосредственного пользования), так как лицо А обязательно когда-либо умрет, и тогда лицо Б (или его наследник, если лицо Б к тому времени тоже умрет) унаследует имущество. Дарение лицу В с условием, что оно станет владельцем, когда “оно достигнет возраста 30 лет”, не является закрепленным, так как лицо В может умереть, не достигнув указанного возраста. Имущественные права или участие, не закрепленные законом, называются условным правом (contingent interest).
