L’ebook désigne ici l’appareil dédié à la lecture de livres numériques. Appelé aussi "livre électronique" ou "tablette de lecture", un ebook a la taille d’un gros livre, avec un écran à cristaux liquides (ou écran LCD: liquid crystal display) rétro-éclairé ou non, noir et blanc ou en couleur. Il fonctionne sur batterie et dispose d’un modem intégré, d’un port USB (universal serial bus), d’une connexion Bluetooth ou d’une connexion WiFi, selon les modèles, pour connexion à l’internet et téléchargement des livres à partir de sites d’éditeurs ou de librairies numériques. -

Les modèles pionniers sont le Rocket eBook (commercialisé en 1999 par NuvoMedia), le Softbook Reader (commercialisé en 1999 par Softbook Press), le Cybook (commercialisé entre janvier 2001 et avril 2002 par Cytale) et les modèles de Gemstar eBook (commercialisés entre novembre 2000 et juin 2003 par Gemstar). Monotâche, l’ebook est rapidement supplanté par le PDA (personal digital assistant) qui, outre la lecture de livres numériques, offre d’autres fonctionnalités (agenda, dictaphone, lecteur de musique, etc.). L’ebook est également supplanté par l’ordinateur ultra-portable et la tablette PC. En avril 2004, Sony lance au Japon le Librié, un ebook utilisant une technologie d’affichage utilisant l’encre électronique développée par E Ink.
