101 ослабевать
Ослабевать - to be reduced, to be decreased, to attenuate, to die away (о действии, процессе); to become loose (о натяжении, затяжке)The effect of the inhibitor is reduced by the presence of the substrate. (Из-за наличия субстрата действие ингибитора ослабевает)Later in the fatigue life this type of feature [transgranular separation] dominated, as the intergranular fractures died away.If the tension in the drive string becomes too loose, rotate the drum counter-clockwise against the stop to expose the tension adjustment.Русско-английский научно-технический словарь переводчика > ослабевать

104 anquera
(Sp. model spelled same [arjkera] < Italian or Old Provencal anca 'croup or hindquarters' plus Spanish suffix -era, 'place where something is used'; hence, 'an item that is used on the horse's hindquarters')Mexico and California: 1881. A wide, often highly decorated piece of leather at the base of a western saddle lacking a rear jockey. Watts indicates that the anquera was used when another rider was placed to the rear of the first. Its practical function was to safeguard the second rider from contact with a sweaty horse. Other sources (including Blevins and Rossi, as cited in Watts) claim that the anquera had principally a decorative function. This term is not found in the DRAE, but the DM defines it as a type of leather cover attached to the cantle behind the saddle. Decorated with a string of small iron bells, it covers the horse's hindquarters and extends to the hocks. It is used in the breaking of a horse and as protection during bullfights or when the animal is thrown on the ground. According to Santamaría, the term is rarely used in Spanish today. The anquera is considered a characteristic feature of nineteenth-century Mexican saddles. -
105 remuda
Clark: 1840s. A herd of domesticated horses on a ranch or trail drive under the charge of a remudero or wrangler. At the beginning of each shift, cowboys would choose their mount from this herd. Horses in this type of herd are said to be in remuda. Watts indicates that since the turn of the century this term has been used on occasion to allude to a cowboy's personal string or even a single horse. Spanish sources provide similar definitions, but none exactly like the southwestern meaning. The DRAE glosses remuda as a change, such as a change of clothing. Santamaría defines it as a relay or draft horse, or a horse or mule that relieves another animal that has become tired from working.Alternate form: remouda. -

110 Fox, Sir Charles
[br]b. 11 March 1810 Derby, Englandd. 14 June 1874 Blackheath, London, England[br]English railway engineer, builder of Crystal Palace, London.[br]Fox was a pupil of John Ericsson, helped to build the locomotive Novelty, and drove it at the Rainhill Trials in 1829. He became a driver on the Liverpool \& Manchester Railway and then a pupil of Robert Stephenson, who appointed him an assistant engineer for construction of the southern part of the London \& Birmingham Railway, opened in 1837. He was probably responsible for the design of the early bow-string girder bridge which carried the railway over the Regent's Canal. He also invented turnouts with switch blades, i.e. "points". With Robert Stephenson he designed the light iron train sheds at Euston Station, a type of roof that was subsequently much used elsewhere. He then became a partner in Fox, Henderson \& Co., railway contractors and manufacturers of railway equipment and bridges. The firm built the Crystal Palace in London for the Great Exhibition of 1851: Fox did much of the detail design work personally and was subsequently knighted. It also built many station roofs, including that at Paddington. From 1857 Fox was in practice in London as a consulting engineer in partnership with his sons, Charles Douglas Fox and Francis Fox. Sir Charles Fox became an advocate of light and narrow-gauge railways, although he was opposed to break-of-gauge unless it was unavoidable. He was joint Engineer for the Indian Tramway Company, building the first narrow-gauge (3 ft 6 in. or 107 cm) railway in India, opened in 1865, and his firm was Consulting Engineer for the first railways in Queensland, Australia, built to the same gauge at the same period on recommendation of Government Engineer A.C.Fitzgibbon.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsKnighted 1851.Further ReadingObituary, 1875, Minutes of Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers 39:264.F.Fox, 1904, River, Road, and Rail, John Murray, Ch. 1 (personal reminiscences by his son).L.T.C.Rolt, 1970, Victorian Engineering, London: Allen Lane.PJGR -

Photovoltaic plants
A photovoltaic plant permits to convert the energy associated with solar irradiation into electrical energy of direct type; these plants are constituted by panels of semiconducting material, which can generate electrical power once exposed to the rays of the sun.
Photovoltaic plants can be grid-connected or supply a single load (stand alone plant).
In this last case an accumulator battery shall be present to provide power supply in case of lack of solar radiation.
The basic element of a photovoltaic plant is the photovoltaic cell constituted by semiconducting material (amorphous silicon or monocrystalline silicon); this cell, exposed to the rays of the sun, is able to supply a maximum current Impp at a maximum voltage Vmpp, which a maximum power called Wp corresponds to.
More photovoltaic cells are connected in series to form a string to raise the voltage level; by connecting more strings in parallel, the current level is increased.
For example, if a single cell can provide 5A at 35.5 Vd.c., in order to reach the level of 100A at 500 Vd.c., it is necessary to connect 20 strings in parallel, each of them constituted by 15 cells.
Generally speaking, a stand alone photovoltaic plant is constituted by the following devices:
- photovoltaic array: constituted by the photovoltaic cells suitably interconnected and used for the conversion of sunlight energy into electrical energy;
- charge regulator: it is an electronic device able to regulate charging and discharging of accumulators;
- accumulator batteries: they can provide power supply in case of lack of solar radiation;
- DC/AC inverter: it has the function of turning direct current into alternating current by controlling it and stabilizing its frequency and waveform.
The following figure shows the block diagram of a stand alone photovoltaic plant..
- фотоэлектрическая батарея: состоит из соединенных между собой фотоэлементов, преобразующих солнечную энергию в электрическую;
- регулятор заряда: электронное устройство, предназначенное для регулирования заряда и разряда аккумуляторов;
