  • 3 checksum

"A calculated value that is used to test data for the presence of errors that can occur when data is transmitted or when it is written to disk. The checksum is calculated for a given chunk of data by sequentially combining all the bytes of data with a series of arithmetic or logical operations. After the data is transmitted or stored, a new checksum is calculated in the same way using the (possibly faulty) transmitted or stored data. If the two checksums do not match, an error has occurred, and the data should be transmitted or stored again. Checksums cannot detect all errors, and they cannot be used to correct erroneous data."

  • 4 inverse multiplexing

"The process whereby bandwidth enables a call to transmit more information at the same time in the same timeframe than information from a single signal transmitted over a single channel. This is accomplished by splitting a single high-speed channel into multiple signals, transmitting the multiple signals over multiple facilities operating at a lower rate than the original signal, and then recombining the separately transmitted portions into the original signal at the original rate."

  • 5 digital signature

"Data that binds a sender's identity to the information being sent. A digital signature may be bundled with any message, file, or other digitally encoded information, or transmitted separately. Digital signatures are used in public key environments and provide authentication and integrity services."

  • 6 junk e-mail

"An unsolicited and typically unwelcome message, often commercial or political in nature, transmitted via the Internet as a mass mailing (sometimes as if from a fictitious user or domain) to a large number of recipients."

  • 10 throughput

"The data transfer rate of a network, measured as the number of bits per second transmitted."

    English-Arabic terms dictionary > throughput

  • 11 ACK

"A message transmitted to indicate that data has been received correctly. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) requires that the recipient acknowledge successful receipt of data. Such acknowledgments (ACKs) generate additional network traffic, decreasing the rate at which data passes but increasing reliability. To reduce the impact on performance, most hosts send an acknowledgment for every other segment or when a specified time interval has passed."

    English-Arabic terms dictionary > ACK

  • 13 attenuation

"The weakening of a transmitted signal, such as the distortion of a digital signal or the reduction in amplitude of an electrical signal. Attenuation is usually measured in decibels and is sometimes desirable, as when signal strength is reduced electronically, for example, by a radio volume control, to prevent overloading."

    English-Arabic terms dictionary > attenuation

  • 14 bit rate

English-Arabic terms dictionary > bit rate

  • 15 bitrate

  • 16 compress

"To reduce the size of a set of data, such as a file or a communications message, so that it can be stored in less space or transmitted with less bandwidth."

    English-Arabic terms dictionary > compress

  • 17 CRC

"A procedure used in checking for errors in data transmission. CRC error checking uses a complex calculation to generate a number based on the data transmitted. The sending device performs the calculation before transmission and includes it in the packet that it sends to the receiving device. The receiving device repeats the same calculation after transmission. If both devices obtain the same result, it is assumed that the transmission was error free. The procedure is known as a redundancy check because each transmission includes not only data but extra (redundant) error-checking values. Communications protocols such as XMODEM and Kermit use cyclical redundancy checking."
