Когда исчезал основной источник процветания городка Фронтира [ Frontier], многие из них, особенно созданные неподалеку от месторождений [mining towns], в местах, отдаленных от дорог или с плохим климатом, быстро пустели или превращались в небольшие поселки. Из-за высокой стоимости строительных материалов уезжавшие поселенцы обычно увозили из брошенного города все, что можно было забрать, поэтому на его месте часто трудно обнаружить даже уцелевшие здания. Иногда на месте поселка оставалась лишь табличка с его названием. Но в некоторых "городах-призраках", тем не менее, оставались какие-то жители, и благодаря им сегодня многое можно узнать о той жизни в музеях под открытым небом (часто в виде реставрированных салунов [ saloon], постоялых дворов и лавок, например, в Вирджиния-Сити [ Virginia City], шт.
