In that case, the literal meaning is simply *"First One". But it is possible that on is actually derived from the stem ONO "beget", and that "First-begotten" really is the literal meaning.) According to VT46:12, Tolkien also considered erdë as a word for "repose", but he marked it with an X, possibly indicating that he considered abandoning this word because it clashed with erdë "seed, germ".
