д.): to lessen the number of books, to lessen one's desire, to lessen the pain. Decrease обычно предполагает длительное или прогрессирующее уменьшение: his temperature decreases, her fears decreased with the approach of dawn. 20% – to decrease by 20 per cent. Reduce определяет главным образом уменьшение размера, количества, веса, протяженности: to reduce the price, to reduce the distance, to reduce the weight. Diminish имеет в виду уменьшение, связанное с потерей, утратой – to diminish the country's wealth, to diminish food supplies. Minimize означает 'доводить до предельного минимума': to minimize the friction.
