4 Book-Fold
BOOK-FOLD (American, official)A form and a method of putting up and packing in convenient form, used for the shipping and storing of fabrics of a wide width. This is in contrast to the form and method of rolling fabrics of broad width, either on to paper tubes or on to heavy cardboards like a bolt. The goods may or may not be doubled in the centre to one-half their width, and are thus folded in successive layers of an equal length, usually of 11/4 yard to each layer, until the entire piece is " done (put) up " in folds with the respective mill-ends being lapped inside the first or last fold. Hence the piece is placed on to a white tissue paper which is wider in width than the folds. The tissue is in turn protected by a medium stiff " buff and white " wrapper that tallies in width with the width of the folds. The piece is next put (packed) into book-fold by tucking both ends of the folds in with the respective tissue paper and the buff and white wrapper, while in the width overlapping stubs of tissue paper are tucked under the buff and white wrapper. ———————— A finisher's term to indicate that the cloth has to be in such a way as to open like a book from the centre, with the folds resembling the leaves of a book. -

7 Open Content Alliance
( OCA)L’Open Content Alliance (OCA) est une initiative lancée en octobre 2005 par l’Internet Archive afin de créer un vaste répertoire libre et multilingue de livres numérisés et de documents multimédia pour consultation et téléchargement sur n’importe quel moteur de recherche. Un site de démonstration, l’Open Library, présente le projet et montre quelques livres numérisés issus des fonds de l’Université de Californie. L’OPA regroupe de nombreux partenaires: bibliothèques, universités, organisations gouvernementales, associations à but non lucratif, organismes culturels, sociétés informatiques (Adobe, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Yahoo!, Xerox, etc.). Les premières bibliothèques participantes sont les bibliothèques des universités de Californie et de Toronto, l’European Archive, les Archives nationales du Royaume-Uni, O’Reilly Media et Prelinger Archives. En décembre 2006, l’OCA compte 100.000 livres numérisés consultables sur le site de l’Internet Archive (Text Archive). La numérisation atteint désormais un rythme de 12.000 nouveaux livres par mois. A la même date, l’Internet Archive reçoit une subvention d’un million de dollars US de la part de la Sloan Foundation pour poursuivre ce travail en numérisant plusieurs grandes collections émanant entre autres du Metropolitan Museum of Art, du Getty Research Institute et de la Boston Public Library. En mai 2007, l’OCA franchit la barre des 200.000 livres numérisés. -

14 Million Book Project
Lancé en 2000 par cinq professeurs (Jaime Carbonnel, Raj Reddy, Michael Shamos, Gloriana St Clair et Robert Thibadeau) de l’Université Carnegie Mellon (en Pennsylvanie, Etat des Etats-Unis), le Million Book Project a pour but de numériser un million de livres. Cette bibliothèque numérique est hébergée par l’Internet Archive. Les livres sont scannés puis convertis au format texte en utilisant la technologie OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Une présentation complète du projet est donnée dans la FAQ (frequently asked questions). Le Million Book Project a une optique différente du Projet Gutenberg, qui préfère ajouter l’étape de la relecture par des correcteurs, pour avoir un texte parfaitement fiable. Les collections du Million Book Project comprennent 10.500 livres en avril 2005, et sont ensuite intégrées à la section Universal Library de l’Internet Archive. En octobre 2005, l’Internet Archive débute un autre projet de grande envergure avec l’Open Content Alliance (OPA), dont les collections intègrent la section Text Archive. -
15 Google Book Search
En août 2006, Google lance Google Book Search (Google Livres en français) pour remplacer le très controversé Google Print (voir la notice suivante), lancé en octobre 2004 et suspendu en août 2005 pour cause de conflit avec les éditeurs des livres sous droits. Le moteur permet des recherches par date, titre ou éditeur. La numérisation des fonds de grandes bibliothèques se poursuit, en étant cette fois axée sur les livres libres de droit, et sur le développement de partenariats avec les éditeurs qui le souhaitent. Les livres libres de droit sont consultables à l’écran et leur texte copiable, avec possibilité d’impression page à page. Ils sont téléchargeables sous forme de fichiers PDF (portable document format) et imprimables dans leur entier. Pour les livres sous droits, Google fournit la fiche du livre et les extraits comprenant les mots-clés recherchés, en invoquant le droit de citation. De ce fait, le conflit avec les éditeurs se poursuit lui aussi, puisque Google continue de numériser des livres sous droits sans l’autorisation préalable des éditeurs, en invoquant ce droit de citation. L’Authors Guild et l’Association of American Publishers (AAP) invoquent pour leur part le non respect de la législation relative au copyright pour attaquer Google en justice. Le feuilleton judiciaire promet de durer. A l’exception de la New York Public Library, les bibliothèques participantes sont des bibliothèques universitaires (Harvard, Stanford, Michigan, Oxford, California, Virginia, Wisconsin-Madison, Complutense de Madrid). S’y ajoutent début 2007 les bibliothèques des Universités de Princeton et du Texas (Austin), ainsi que la Biblioteca de Catalunya (Catalogne, Espagne) et la Bayerische Staatbibliothek (Bavière, Allemagne). En mai 2007, Google annonce la participation de la première bibliothèque francophone, la bibliothèque cantonale et universitaire (BCU) de Lausanne (Suisse). Google scanne 3.000 livres par jour, ce qui représenterait un million de livres par an. Parallèlement, un autre projet à vaste échelle, respectueux du copyright et sur plateforme ouverte, voit le jour en octobre 2005 sous l’égide de l’Open Content Alliance (OPA). -
