    как известно, большой. На сленге - важный, успешный. Смысл некоторых из многочисленных словосочетаний дан ниже:

    Big brother — "большой брат" (имеется в виду - надзирающее за тобой правительство). Это из Оруэлла, пользующегося огромной популярностью в англоязычном мире.

    Big deal — что-то важное. Not a big deal - ерунда. Мы объясняем загадочностью американской души тот факт, что Big deal! В разговоре чаще всего и означает Not a big deal!, т. е. используется с сарказмом.

    Big idea — обычно в выражении "what's the big idea?" Смысл: что ты с этой ерундой носишься, что ты хочешь этим сказать и т. д. Оттенки те же, что и у нашего "Велика важность!"

    Big man — это запросто может означать и отца (родного), и поставщика наркотиков (см. Drug pusher). Еще одно слово с тем же вторым значением - broker.

    Big mouth (to have a...) — трепач, не в меру болтливый (буквально: большой рот).

    (*)Big shit! — не проблема! Аналог нашего: "Говна-то!" (перевод shit см. ниже).

    Big talk — хвастовство.

    Big buzz — главная сплетня дня, сенсация, то, о чем все говорят (трезвонят, прожужжали все уши). Дословно, buzz - жужжание пчелы или телефонный звонок.

    Big boy (big daddy) — просторечное вежливое (как бы заискивающее) обращение имеющее тот же смысл (или отсутствие оного) как и менее вежливые уличные обращения типа: man (парень) или - you there (эй ты).

    «Шишка». В середине XIX в. английские преступники называли деньги shot ; никто не знает почему. Это выражение вошло в криминальный жаргон, означая любую прибыль, полученную от преступной, незаконной сделки. Воровство, «дело» — приносило a bit shot. Постепенно значение этого слова изменилось, и оно стало обозначать того, кто совершил кражу, а человека, получившего большой куш, восхищённо называли a big shot. Это выражение вошло в разговорную речь и означает любого важного человека.
